2010 Honda Hybrid Spy Video LEARN MORE ABOUT THE 2010 HONDA HYBRID: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=129607?tid=edmunds.il.futurelanding.latestnews..4.* It's been in the works ever since the Honda Insight went out of production in 2006, but this is the first time the 2010 Honda Hybrid Sedan has been caught out in the open. Designed as a direct competitor to the forthcoming 2010 Toyota Prius, this new Honda hybrid sedan is expected to debut early next year. The styling is intended to mimic Honda's FCX Clarity, a hydrogen-powered sedan that Honda began leasing to the public this summer. The Clarity fuel-cell vehicle is closer in size to Honda's Accord sedan while this hybrid will fall somewhere between the Accord and the smaller Civic. More important, this new hybrid sedan is expected to cost less than the Civic sedan. In a press conference earlier this year, Honda CEO Takeo Fukui told reporters that although the company's Prius fighter won't have next-generation lithium-ion batteries, the batteries it will use are lighter and more powerful than the current nickel-metal hydride variety. John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda, added, "These new advancements in Honda's technology and production systems will result in cost reductions that will allow us to make hybrid technology available to a whole new generation of buyers." In other words, even if the new 2010 Honda Hybrid is seen as nothing more than a Prius knockoff, it could still do well in the marketplace based on its rock-bottom price alone. Add in the fact that it could realistically get 45-50 mpg and this new entry-level hybrid sedan could eclipse the Prius as the best-selling hybrid in America — that is, it will be if Honda decides to bump up production. At the moment, Honda expects to ship only 100,000 units to the U.S. per year beginning in the fall of 2009. If gas prices continue on their current trajectory, however, that number could be just the start. Tags: 2010 Honda Hybrid Spy Video alternative fuel efficiency Edmunds Inside Line |

Out-Lexus Lexus? 2009 Hyundai Genesis V6 by Inside Line LEARN MORE ABOUT THE NEW HYUNDAI GENESIS: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=130286?tid=edmunds.il.home.photopanel..1.* Shhh. Do not disturb the 2009 Hyundai Genesis V6. It may be the quietest car we've ever driven. It would be rude to interrupt it. As Hyundai's newest creation slips slyly into the luxury sedan market, we can hear the silent screams of some other fancy automakers. This car is nice. Really nice. 2010 BMW X6 Hybrid Spy Video CHECK OUT THE X6 HYBRID SPY ARTICLE: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=129486?tid=edmunds.il.futurelanding.latestnews..4.* First shown as a concept at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show, the 2010 BMW X6 Hybrid is now headed for production. Far from a fuel-sipping economy car, this gasoline-electric hybrid is designed to take the edge off fuel costs without giving up much in the way of SUV practicality or performance. Prototypes spotted in Death Valley reveal few significant styling changes from the recently introduced X6 other than an obvious bulge in the hood. Subsequent photos show a maze of electrical connections beneath the protruding sheet metal. All the extra hardware is necessary to control what's expected to be a two-mode hybrid system similar to what's found in GM's current Tahoe and Escalade Hybrid SUVs. BMW partnered with GM and Daimler in the development of the system. The two-mode system essentially combines electric motors with a sophisticated automatic transmission and traditional gasoline engine. It is able to provide pure electric power like a Prius, but most of the time it's a mix of both gasoline and electric power. A fuel mileage improvement of around 10-15 percent is about all you can expect given the added weight of the hybrid system's batteries combined with the X6's already substantial curb weight. With full production of the V8-powered X6 just now starting to ramp up to full speed, the introduction of the 2010 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid (as BMW calls it) is probably at least a year away. Expect a substantial price bump, one that could put this hybrid BMW's base price in the $70,000 range. So much for saving money on gas. Can Honda Fit Beat Prius? 2008 Honda Fit vs. 2008 Toyota Prius CHECK OUT THE HYBRID VS. NON-HYBRID COMPARISON: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/... Consider this: The 2008 Toyota Prius base model costs 50 percent more than the 2008 Honda Fit base model. Then again, the Prius is 50 percent more fuel-efficient than the Fit when you look at the EPA's figure for combined mpg. So how does this add up? You could save $8,425 right now by buying a $15,420 Honda Fit instead of the $23,845 Toyota Prius. Of course, if the price of gasoline goes higher, then the Prius with its EPA combined estimate of 46 mpg will pay you back for your investment sooner than you'd expect. Then again, the Fit with its EPA combined estimate of 30 mpg doesn't carry the same penalty of higher financing charges, insurance costs and taxes as the more expensive Prius, plus the Toyota will be needing a new $2,585 battery pack when the odometer shows 100,000-150,000 miles. Which car is best? It sounds like the kind of question for one of those money magazines. Yes, we've painted ourselves into a bit of a projected-cost corner with this comparison of the base models of the 2008 Honda Fit and 2008 Toyota Prius, but we think we can get out without stepping on too much wet paint Tags: 2008 Honda Fit vs. Toyota Prius hybrid alternative fuel car auto motor Edmunds Inside Line |

2010 Lexus RX 350 Getting a Workout on the Nürburgring FOR MORE ABOUT THE NEW LEXUS RX 350: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=129127?tid=edmunds.il.futurelanding.latestnews..5.* You expect to see sports cars, sport sedans and even the occasional economy car on the Nürburgring, but now we're to the point where even luxury crossovers are being tuned on the twisty test circuit in Germany. The 2010 Lexus RX 350 recently hit the 'Ring, and thanks to a lack of camouflage the prototype gave us a good look at what's in store for the upcoming midsize crossover. If you're hoping for big changes you'll be disappointed, as the next RX looks much like the current model in terms of its overall size and shape. There's a slightly revised grille up front that's more angular in appearance along with a reconfigured headlight cluster. In back, a new set of LED taillights is the most noticeable difference. There are a few minor changes to the shape of the rear fascia, but unless you put the 2010 model side by side with the current RX you would find it hard to see the difference between the two. The profile of this new RX is slightly more aggressive than before with a slightly lower roofline. A new design for the rear side windows eliminates one of the smaller quarter windows to give the overall shape a cleaner look. There won't be big changes under the hood, either. A revised version of the current 3.5-liter V6 will provide the power with a six-speed automatic handling the gearchanges. A hybrid model will be available as well, most likely with the same powertrain as the current GS 450h. Although there have been rumors of an extended-length RX with three rows of seating, we have yet to see any prototypes that confirm the predictions. We expect that role will be filled by an all-new Lexus crossover built on the rear-wheel-drive platform that underpins the GS sedan. It will most likely replace the current GX 470 as Lexus looks to move away from body-on-frame platforms in favor of lighter, more space-efficient, car-based unibody crossovers. Look for the official debut of the 2010 RX 350 later this year with sales beginning in early 2009. Tags: 2010 Lexus RX 350 SUV Toyota Edmunds Inside Line |

2010 Chevrolet Equinox: A New Look LEARN MORE ABOUT THE 2010 CHEVY EQUINOX: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=125985 As sales of full-size SUVs continue to tank, vehicles like the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox will become more important than ever to Chevy's bottom line. Between its overall size and smaller engine, the Equinox crossover delivers far better fuel mileage than the truck-based Tahoe while still offering a sizable cabin. An often-overlooked model in the Chevrolet lineup, the Equinox should benefit from slightly more recognizable styling this time around. Even with its considerable camouflage, it's clear that the front of the new Equinox will resemble the larger Traverse crossover and Malibu sedan. A shield-style grille is the most obvious change from the current model, although slimmer, more upright headlights will help reshape the front fascia as well. The profile of the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox appears almost unchanged. It has the same overall shape for the most part except for new split-pane rear windows in place of the current model's single-pane design. It also looks as though the area behind the C-pillars has been extended slightly to accommodate a third row of seats. When the Equinox first debuted as a 2005 model, third-row seats were far less common in compact SUVs, but now this feature is required just to stay competitive in this class of utility vehicles. Expect to see seven-passenger seating as an option. Another new option for the Equinox will be a four-cylinder engine. Stiffer fuel economy regulations make this a must, as the current V6-only model is far from the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its class. A six-speed automatic should be offered across the board as well, and all-wheel drive will be optional. Look for the official debut of the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox either late this year or in early 2009, with sales beginning next spring. 2008 Dodge Viper ACR: From L.A. to Bonneville CHECK OUT THE VIPER AC-R ARTICLE: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=129907?tid=edmunds.il.home.photopanel..2.* We're about to make our first high-speed run in the still-black 2008 Dodge Viper ACR when the old guy pulls up to our makeshift pit. He looks exactly like the guy you'd expect to meet in the middle of the Bonneville Salt Flats, like a worn-out Hank Williams, Jr. Over the deafening cackle of his Cummins-powered diesel pickup, he yells, "What's you boys doin'?" "We're going to make a few runs in this Viper here." "Yeah, how fast will she run?" "We don't really know. Maybe 190 or so." By the expression on his face, it's obvious ol' Hank has figured out that we have no idea what we're doin'. He knows we're just a bunch of yahoos with a fast car. He takes a good long look at the big winged Viper, then he shuts off the truck's engine so we can hear him better. "When you're going fast, the slightest gust of wind can flip you," he says. "That's why we only ran early in the morning when the air was calm." We look up at the mid-afternoon sun and wonder what we've gotten ourselves into. "And make sure you don't run out of room," he continues. "You think you have all the space in the world, then Floating Mountain is suddenly right in your face. I remember when I went for 300 mph back in 1978; my chutes didn't open and I almost didn't get her stopped." He runs his fingers through a white beard. "Didn't make 300 either," he adds. "Only 280." Great. We thought this Bonneville thing was as easy as holding our foot down until the speedometer stopped moving. Now Mr. Monday Night has us imagining our $100,000 Viper sliding across the Utah desert on its roof. Tags: 2008 Dodge Viper ACR Chrysler auto car motor Edmunds Inside Line |

2009 Audi TT-RS Hits the Nürburgring - Spy Video FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE AUDI TT-RS: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=128666?tid=edmunds.il.futurelanding.latestnews..4.* Since its introduction in 1999, the Audi TT has been known for its unique look — and its lackluster performance. The TT hasn't exactly been slow, but its lack of serious horsepower made it more of an image car than a true driver's coupe. This might change with the introduction of the 2009 Audi TT-RS, an all-out performance version of the stylish TT. Caught testing on the Nürburgring test track, the top-of-the-line TT wears several telltale design elements that identify it as a high-performance RS model. Up front, the TT-RS has the same metallic trim across the grille as the TTS, but closer inspection reveals large air intakes at each corner in place of foglights. Other styling differences include seven-spoke wheels and a pair of oval tailpipes, a signature RS design cue. It's hard to peg which engine will provide the power for the TT-RS at this point. Early rumors suggested a turbocharged five-cylinder, but the recent introduction of Audi's new 3.0-liter TFSI V6 suggests otherwise. The new supercharged motor is expected to develop roughly 300 horsepower in U.S. trim, a number that would put the TT-RS a solid notch above the TTS with its turbocharged 265-hp inline-4. Expect one of Audi's S tronic dual-clutch gearboxes with either six gears or possibly even seven. Like all RS models, the TT version will also get a retuned suspension, larger wheels and tires and upgraded brakes. Minor interior upgrades will be part of the package as well. Given the lack of camouflage on this test mule, expect a public introduction in the next few months, with U.S sales starting by early next year. 2010 Chevrolet Camaro: Backing Up Style With Substance CHECK OUT THE NEW CAMARO: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=129446#2 Behold: The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro in all its full-on production glory. What? Well yes, it looks like that Camaro Concept we saw more than two and a half years ago at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show. And it looks exactly as you knew it would from two years of spy shots of the car under development. And it will look exactly like this when it goes on sale in March of next year. You expected what? That it would look like a Corsica or a Mark VIII? Enthusiasts would no more forgive Chevrolet for watering down the stunning 2006 Camaro concept than they would forgive General Motors if it decided a year from now to cancel the Volt program. The concept, with its steely, all-business color, dark-tinted glass, pavement-skimming raked stance and fang-shaped side mirrors, looked like a 1969 Camaro designed by the Lockheed Skunk Works. Of course, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro production-specification cars pictured here — V6 models with 20-inch wheels that come as part of the RS trim package — don't get the slammed stance, chopped roof and black windows of the concept. Nor do they have the 22-inch rear and 21-inch front wheels of the concept. The V8 model of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro — called the SS — won't have that showcar ornamentation either. Chevy is holding back on revealing the SS for reasons that make sense only within the confines of GM's headquarters at the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit, even though it looks very nearly identical to the V6 model with the RS package. (In case you were wondering, the SS will have the concept car's little mail-slot opening on the top of the front fascia. This particular aperture has no historical precedent in the world of Camaro and owes more to the Corvette Z06 or the Mini Cooper S.) But we're still happy. 2010 Ford F-150 Raptor Spy Video http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=128474?tid=edmunds.il.futurelanding.latestnews..1.* It wasn't in the initial product plans, but the 2010 Ford F-150 Raptor looks as though it has progressed into a full-scale production vehicle. Originally an under-the-radar project championed by a few dedicated engineers at Ford, the Raptor has already been shown to dealers and is expected to go on sale next year. The existence of the Raptor has been a well-kept secret until Sean Holman, an editor at Four Wheeler magazine, spotted a prototype testing in the California desert last year. Since then, Holman has been tracking the development of the new truck, and now we can show you the first spy video of the Raptor trolling the streets of Dearborn. A dedicated off-road truck, the Raptor will feature a fully customized suspension with unique wheels and tires, Holman says. Front-wheel travel is said to be increased by 4 inches thanks to Eibach springs and Fox remote-reservoir dampers. The tires appear to be 35-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/As mounted on 17-inch wheels, and an electronically controlled locking rear differential will come standard on the four-wheel-drive truck. The engine that will power the F-150 Raptor is still unknown. The Raptor was originally scheduled to introduce the new Boss V8, but that program has been scaled back due to fuel-efficiency concerns. It's possible that the planned 6.2-liter V8 will still make its way into the Raptor, but a carryover engine from the current lineup is a more likely scenario. Ford's 5.4-liter V8 is currently the biggest engine available in the F-150 and the most potent version is the supercharged motor in the Harley-Davidson edition. It uses a Saleen supercharger to make 450 horsepower, but the prototype in our video clearly pulls into a Roush facility. It shouldn't make much of a difference though, as the big V8 should make at least 400 hp regardless of which supercharger it uses. Then again, all of this speculation could be rendered useless if Ford decides that plummeting truck sales will make the Raptor a tough sell. Sales of the redesigned 2009 Ford F-150 have already been pushed back by two months, and the Boss engine program could be cancelled altogether if fuel regulations continue to tighten. Let's hope this is not the case, as the Raptor is one of the coolest factory-built specials we've seen in a long time — at least in prototype form. Topless & Clutchless: 2008 BMW M3 Convertible With M DCT LEARN MORE ABOUT THE NEW BMW M3: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=129086 We're on final approach into a tight corner, and our left index finger stretches for the minus paddle behind the 2008 BMW M3 Convertible's small, fat-rimmed steering wheel. All we want is a quick, rev-matched, 3-2 downshift from the car's seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Our downshift arrives in a violent, noisy spasm, a come-on to every sport biker in the canyon. Yet it still feels like one of the most precise gearchanges we've ever been able to take credit for. It also makes the BMW M3's 4.0-liter V8 very happy. Back down in 2nd gear, the free-revving engine howls to the bikers, and even through gusts of wind and gnats, we hear it tell us how much it hates neutral throttle. If you're not working this V8, you're killing it softly. Messy emotions are inevitable when you're driving a hardtop-convertible version of a legendary performance car, as the thrill of a sunburn on a summer day has a way of obscuring unfortunate realities like excess curb weight and reduced structural rigidity. But there's nothing messy or emotional about BMW's new dual-clutch gearbox (abbreviated as M DCT, or M DKG if you're German), which is all business in all of its 11 shift modes. It's also such an effective replacement for the 2008 BMW M3's conventional manual transmission that we wonder if it's not a greater threat to M-division purists than a bulky retractable hardtop. 2009 Lotus Eagle Hits the Nürburgring FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE LOTUS EAGLE: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=126898 It's less than two months away from its official introduction, so it's no surprise that we're finally seeing prototypes of the 2009 Lotus Eagle. It's another midengine sports car from the famed British car builder and it was caught testing recently on the Nürburgring under heavy camouflage. The Lotus Eagle will be the first production vehicle to use the company's new Versatile Vehicle Architecture (VVA). Built to accommodate various body types, the VVA was first shown beneath the APX concept at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show. That vehicle was a compact crossover, but the Eagle will be a midrange 2+2 coupe. Judging by the photos of the prototype on the Nürburgring, the accommodations in back won't amount to anything more than miniscule jump seats. Although the VVA will allow Lotus to push the Eagle's wheelbase beyond the 90-inch mark found on the Elise, don't expect a significantly larger car. Most of the extra room will go toward accommodating a V6 engine. Lotus CEO Mike Kimberley has said publicly that the Eagle will use a Toyota-built V6. Most speculation pins the power plant in the 3.0- to 3.5-liter range with roughly 230-260 horsepower. A six-speed manual is the most likely transmission, although Lotus might finally bow to customer concerns and offer an automatic as well. The official unveiling of the 2009 Lotus Eagle is slated for the 2008 London Auto Show in late July. Production will begin later this year, with sales starting by early 2009. Imagine the fun! Donny and Danny hangin' tough from the walls of the cage while Joey, Jordan and Jonathan get tossed into the crowd. The way we see it, our Rampage vs. New Kids bout is no different from pitting the Mazdaspeed 3 — the current champ of the sport compact world — against the Lancer Ralliart and Subaru WRX. On the track, an epic ass-kicking is bound to ensue. But comparison tests aren't always won on the track. Since these cars all share a focus on real-world driving for enthusiasts, we weighted performance as 25 percent of this test's scoring total, leaving the remaining points to price (20 percent), feature content (20 percent), fuel economy (15 percent), our subjective evaluation (15 percent) and personal and recommended picks (5 percent). 2009 BMW 7 Series Spied on the Nürburgring http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=127892 Now that most of the camouflage has come off the 2009 BMW 7 Series, we can finally see some of the details. The verdict? Inconclusive, as it still looks a lot like the current 7 Series, judging by what we can see. The overall greenhouse appears almost unchanged, while the front and rear ends show only minor revisions. A taller hood area is the most noticeable difference up front, most likely a consequence of European pedestrian crash test standards. You can see it in the taller, narrower grille and more prominent crease in the hood. If you hate the distinctive trunk design that pioneered on the 2002 7 Series, you're still out of luck, as it appears intact on this prototype. We expect to see a new taillight design that will reduce the 7's bulky rear end, but anyone hoping for a wholesale redesign will be disappointed. Like the current 7 Series, there will be the usual range of V8 and V12 engines. The twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 that debuted in the X6 will most likely power the standard version. With 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, the next 7 Series should be one of the faster V8 luxury sedans around, especially if BMW goes ahead with an eight-speed automatic transmission as the rumors suggest. A V12 version with even more power should follow shortly after. Given BMW's participation in a hybrid development program with Daimler and General Motors, it's a good bet that the 7 Series will offer the option of a gas-electric hybrid drivetrain at some point, too. Diesel is another possible option, although BMW may want to wait and see how the 335d and X5 diesel fare in the U.S. before sending any oil-burning 7 Series our way. Look for the official pics and information to arrive sometime this summer. An official auto show debut is expected at the Paris auto show in October, with European sales beginning later this year. Sales in the U.S. should start by the spring of 2009. Tags: 2009 BMW Series spy video car auto motor Edmunds Inside Line |

2011 BMW 5 Series Prototypes Caught Testing in Europe FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE NEW 5 SERIES: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=127846?tid=edmunds.il.futurelanding.latestnews..3.* We've seen test mules of the 2011 BMW 5 Series before, first on the streets of Germany and then in the snow of the Arctic Circle. Our latest spy video shows the next-generation 5 Series in the mountains of Austria and on the Nürburgring test track in Germany. Like the prototypes seen earlier, these latest 5 Series mules are covered in heavy camouflage. It doesn't matter much, as this evolution isn't expected to change drastically from the current model. The overall size of this prototype doesn't appear substantially different, so we don't expect any major changes in terms of passenger room, either. The real unknowns lie in the choices BMW will make when it comes time to put an engine under the new sheet metal. Given the somewhat higher sales volume of the 5 Series compared to the more expensive 7 Series, fuel economy will play a slightly more important role. The twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 that's expected to power the 7 Series might prove too thirsty, so BMW could opt for a more efficient V8 to keep overall fuel consumption down. Meanwhile, expect to see the continued use of BMW's inline-6s for base and midrange models. On the tech side, this 5 Series will be the third car in the BMW lineup to use FlexRay for the vehicle's internal control systems. The electronic technology system is designed to allow much faster communications among all the various vehicle systems. BMW first introduced FlexRay for the new-generation X5, although only the vehicle's electronic damping control system exploits the system's faster processing speed. The upcoming 2009 BMW 7 Series is expected to use FlexRay technology for at least a dozen systems, so the 5 Series will most likely go even further. Expect to see even more driver adjustability built into the car as well as additional integration among systems like Active Steering Control, Electronic Differential Control and the usual traction and stability control systems. You can expect to see the official debut of the 2011 BMW 5 Series at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show, with U.S. sales beginning a year or so after. NSX Unleashed: 2011 Acura NSX Finally Hits the Nürburgring FOR MORE ABOUT THE ACURA NSX SPY VIDEO: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/GeneralFuture/articleId=127446?tid=edmunds.il.futurelanding.latestnews..4.* The latest prototype of the 2011 Acura NSX has finally hit the Nürburgring and it's looking — and sounding — better than ever. Unlike the previous prototypes — which were nothing more than cobbled-together test mules built from the S2000 platform — this NSX has bodywork that looks close to production specification. Although the design of the original concept didn't get favorable reviews, it appears as though Acura has stuck with similar styling for the production car. Instead of going for an all-out sports car, Acura is aiming for high-end GTs instead. Think Aston Martin DB9, not Nissan GT-R. As a result, Acura has abandoned its former midengine concept and adopted a traditional front-engine 2+2 layout. The company is after prestige, not just speed. That said, the 2011 Acura NSX is still expected to offer supercar performance. According to our sources in Japan, Takeo Fukui, Honda's CEO, has tasked his R&D team with building an NSX that's faster around the Nürburgring than both the 2009 Nissan GT-R and the upcoming Lexus LF-A. Sounds optimistic, but according to our shooters Honda is already close to its goal. One hand timed lap came in at 7:37, just 8 seconds longer than the GT-R's fastest lap. Not bad considering that this was Honda's first trip to the Nürburgring with this prototype. Credit the NSX's formidable new power plant, a 5.5-liter V10 with as much as 550 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. The engine is a slightly larger version of the V8 that Honda will use for the next-generation rear-wheel-drive RL sedan, and it will use cylinder deactivation under light loads for maximum efficiency. Additional efficiency gains will come from the use of an eight-speed automatic transmission that will feature shift paddles on the steering wheel. Getting all this power to the ground will be a challenge in a front-engine car, so the new NSX will employ a modified version of Honda's Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) system. Packaging could be tight, however, with the big V10 up front. A combination of steel and aluminum will be used for the chassis that will form the basis for what looks like a relatively small car. We have reports of NSX mules being tested in the U.S. alongside the Aston Martin DB9, Mercedes-Benz SL550 and the Porsche 911 Turbo, so this should tell you about the kind of car the NSX will become. There's still time for changes, though, as the 2011 Acura NSX isn't expected to go on sale until late 2010. Who knows what Nissan and Lexus will have on the road by then, but from the sound of it, Honda is making sure that the NSX won't be lagging behind. Lotus Underwhelms: 2006 Lotus Exige by Secant Vehicles LEARN MORE ABOUT THE LOTUS EXIGE: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=128546 The last time we saw an American entrepreneur stuffing a powerful American-built engine into an unsuspecting British sports car, it was the 1960s and it was Carroll Shelby. The meek AC Ace roadster was, shall we say, invigorated by his fitment of the Ford V8 into its lightweight body shell. Fast-forward nearly a half-century. Secant Vehicles, a small start-up headquartered in San Francisco, has developed a GM Ecotec engine conversion for every Lotus Elise (or Exige) built since the waspish midengine sports car's 2005 introduction. The players are different, but the three-step formula for the Lotus Exige by Secant is the same as Shelby's: Step 1 — Find a small car. Step 2 — Add power. Step 3 — Kick ass. So has history been repeated? We drove Secant's development car, a 2006 Lotus Exige equipped with the optional Track Pack suspension, to find out. Battle of the Crossover SUV's: Honda v Mazda v Toyota LEARN MORE ABOUT CROSSOVERS: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/Comparos/articleId=128367?tid=edmunds.il.home.photopanel..3.* We keep a couple seven-passenger crossover SUVs in our long-term test fleet and they're indispensable for carting around kids, terriers and lawn furniture. Of course, we still crack the obvious jokes. We'll tell you that these are minivans with hinged doors, SUVs trail-rated for the Starbucks drive-thru, tall wagons that think they're too good to be called tall wagons. But there's nothing superficial or irrational about crossover SUVs like the 2009 Honda Pilot, 2008 Mazda CX-9 or 2008 Toyota Highlander. All three make good on the crossover promise of a vast interior, easy maneuverability and decent fuel economy. Maybe you're aghast that anyone would need three rows of seating, but maybe you've never tried to cram three toddlers in Britax car seats into a Honda Accord. We have. You need that third row. But if that third row were in a minivan, you might find yourself filling a prescription for antidepressants. This leaves you to consider a crossover SUV of medium-to-large proportions. Just about any current-day crossover will accomplish the basics, but the diversity of this vehicle genre might catch you off guard. Even though the 2009 Honda Pilot, 2008 Mazda CX-9 and 2008 Toyota Highlander seem to match one another airbag for airbag, their personalities are so different that you can't drive them without taking sides.
