Latin Mass by Vierne recorded at St. Sulpice with Propers In October of 2007 JAV Recordings recreated Easter Sunday Mass at Saint-Sulpice from the time Vierne and Widor. The Vierne Mass was sung by the Choeur d'Oratorio de Paris directed by Jean Sourisse, accompanied by Daniel Roth and Eric Leburn. All of the Propers was sung by the Choeur d'Oratorio de Paris directed by Thibaut Marlin, accompanied by Eric Leburn on the choir organ. Daniel Roth provided beautiful improvisations in a style of the early 20th century on the Gallery Organ and he and Eric Leburn joined in dialog improvisation on both organs in Saint-Sulpice at times. The soloists were: Edward Schaefer, priest; Hervé Lamy, deacon; Sébastien Amadieu, sub deacon. This video was recorded with separate microphones from those used to make the recording, but this gives a small idea of what happened on those 4 nights at Saint-Sulpice to make this landmark recording. The expected release date of this Surround Sound recording is Spring of 2008. Stephen Tharp plays Vierne for Our Lady of Refuge Organ Fund Stephen Tharp the famed American Concert Organist has just recorded a benefit CD to help raise $200,000 for the complete restoration of the pipe organ at the Parish of Our Lady of Refuge in Brooklyn, NY. This Video was filmed March 10, 2007 at the console of the church's 25 rank Kilgen, Opus 5163. This instrument was built to the design of Charles M. Courboin. Construction was started on the organ in September of 1933 and completed on November 30, 1933 "except console-awaiting shipping instructions". It was shipped to the church in January of 1934 and the church was dedicated in June of 1934. On Monday March 12, 2007 the Organ Clearing House removed the organ from its chambers to protect its 1800 pipes and mechanism from harm while major structural repairs are carried out in the organ chambers and to the tower of the church. During the time the organ is out of the chambers (stored in large wooden crates on the church property) the parish must raise funds to re-leather the entire organ and clean all of the pipes in the organ (for stability of tone and tuning). This work will be carried out by the Ohio firm of A. R. Schopp's Sons, Inc in conjunction with James Konzelman and the Organ Clearing House. The parish is working hard to raise funds to accomplish this, but the parish is seeking outside funds to augment its fund raising activities. Once fully restored this organ will last many generations. Can you help us restore and save a pipe organ? If you are interested in helping and have questions please contact the Pastor, Fr. Michael Perry at the rectory. Our Lady of Refuge Church, R.C. 2020 Foster Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11210 718 434 5620 On line help can be given through: http://www.ndnyc.org/ndnyc/ndnyc/our_lady_of_refuge_organ_repair.html Special Thanks to James Konzelman for his expert tuning on Saturday and dedication to this project. Stephen Tharp plays the Skinner Organ at Rosary Cathedral The Organ at Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral was built by the Skinner Organ Company of Boston in 1931 as their Opus 820 and dedicated with great fanfare with a recital by Professor Palmer Christian of the University of Michigan, and a performance of Elgar's Dream of Gerontius. Ernest Skinner designed and oversaw the construction and installation of the organ at the Cathedral during his final years at the company he founded in 1901 before being forced out in 1936. It is remarkable to think of all of the Skinner Organs that once were to be found in Toledo. However, with time and changing fashions, some people wanted to try to improve Skinner organs, but only managed to compromise their integrity. Mr. Skinner's organs are like the string instruments of Stradivarius; no improvements are needed! In the city of Toledo, after a time many of the "improved" and renovated organs were removed, leaving only two original Skinner Organs; the one at Rosary Cathedral and the newly restored organ at the Toledo Art Museum, Opus 603. I first recorded Stuart Forster at Rosary Cathedral in 1998, and then later Todd Wilson and Ken Cowan. This organ is always a joy to visit, and the staff and clergy of the Cathedral are a joy to work with. This is a short video I made of Stephen Tharp recording the Rosary Cathedral organ on the night of August 31, 2006. The resulting CD will be a collection of much-loved hymns played on this organ. I hope you enjoy these video samples of the CD that will be issued in the winter of 2007. I'm certain that you will agree with me that this organ is truly an American treasure. You will note better sound on these videos. I took the audio files from the sound I recorded for the CD and synchronized it with the video. I think you will appreciate the improvement. If you, my loyal and valued patrons, buy more of my Cds, this will allow me to buy a better camera and some lighting! I genuinely enjoy making these videos, especially for those of you who cannot share in the hair-raising thrill of hearing these spectacular instruments in person. I am a firm believer in the majesty and beauty of the world's greatest pipe organs, and in the need to preserve and document them, as well as promote the incredibly gifted performers who know how to play them so effectively. These instruments and players deserve to be recognized, and I am pleased to serve as their advocate. With your help, we can assure the future of the great pipe organs of the world. My thanks to you for your continued support! Visit the JAV Webstore at www.pipeorgancds.com; there you will find over 70 different titles of organ recordings from around the world Now get ready to enjoy my latest video! Joe Vitacco - JAV Recordings, Inc. http://www.pipeorgancds.com ---------------- From the organist: Tonight I finished a CD recording of hymns, both familiar and unfamiliar, at Holy Rosary Cathedral, Toledo, Ohio. This is the first full-length hymn disc that I have done, and having the opportunity to bring it into fruition on this particular Skinner organ made for an incredibly artistic result and a most memorable experience. On this video, I play Comfort, comfort Ye my People and The Strife is O'er. The sound from the recording session itself is matched up here with the video made during actual takes. This will be my fourth disc for JAV Recordings, and my thirteenth CD recording-to-date. I am very grateful to Joe Vitacco and JAV for asking me to make this recording on such a rare, beautiful and noteworthy instrument. Stephen Tharp. Vincent Dubois plays the Cavaillé-Coll Organ at St. Sulpice Buy a copy of this SACD/CD at: http://www.pipeorgancds.com/vidususocdat.html Vincent Dubois has performed in many countries throughout Europe as well as the USA. He won the Recital Gold Medal at the 2002 Royal Bank Calgary International Organ Festival and Competition, and most recently, the 1st Grand Prix in the 2002 International Competition of Toulouse. Mr. Dubois currently teaches harmony and counterpoint at Angers National Conservatory where in 2005 he was appointed assistant-manager of the conservatory. He is also the titular organist at the Cathedral of Soissons. Mr. Dubois was invited by Daniel Roth, titular organist of St. Sulpice in Paris, to make a recording for JAV Recordings on the 1862 Cavaille-Coll Organ. This instrument is one of the great French builder's masterpieces which comes down to us as the builder left it. This disc will include organ music of Lizst, Duruflé, Rachmaninoff, Mozart and an improvisation by Mr. Dubois. It was recorded on May 13, 2006 and will be available in SACD surround sound in 2007. This film was made late on the evening of May 11, 2006 at St. Sulpice. I took a cab across Paris and met Michel Goussu (organ curator of St. Sulpice) at the back door around 10pm. Vincent was practicing Franz Liszt's Evocation of the Sistine Chapel. They practiced while I took lots of photos, and before midnight I filmed my video which contains the Liszt and the first movement of Widor's 6th Organ Symphony.
