Midnight Star - Operator HQ Video The group was formed in 1976 at Kentucky State University by the Calloway brothers - trumpeter Reginald and trombone player Vincent, vocalist Belinda Lipscomb, guitarist Melvin Gentry, bassist Kenneth Gant, multi-instrumentalist Bill Simmons, keyboard player Bo Watson and guitarist/keyboardist Jeff Cooper, as a self-contained group. Signing to RCA Records, they released their debut album The Beginning [1980] with a host of studio musicians. In 1981 their second album, released on Solar Records, Standing Together, reached position #54 on the Top R&B chart. In 1982 they released a third album, Victory. Owing to Reggie Calloway's production skills, it didn't take long for Midnight Star to hit the R&B charts with early singles like "Hot Spot" and "I've Been Watching You." Drummer Bobby Lovelace joined the group in late 1982, freeing Gentry to sing and play guitar exclusively. Their fourth album, No Parking on the Dance Floor, was released in 1983, and it took them to the top of the charts with the first single, "Freak-A-Zoid," which went to number two. Other singles from the album included the title track, "Wet My Whistle," and "Electricity." These singles, along with the hit album track "Slow Jam" (co-written by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds) propelled the album to platinum status. Their next album, Planetary Invasion, was almost as big, selling platinum again and making the pop Top 20 and the number one spot on the R&B chart with its first single "Operator." This song remains the band's only Billboard Top 40 hit to date.In 1986 they released their fifth album, Headlines, which was their third album to sell at least gold. It was to be their last, as the Calloways departed in 1988 after irreconcilable differences with the other members. They achieved their biggest success in the UK with "Midas Touch", which made #8, and later with "Headlines", a #16 hit the same year. Without the Calloways (who would go on to form the group Calloway and release an album that spawned the hit single "I Wanna Be Rich" in 1989), Midnight Star recorded two more albums, the self-titled Midnight Star and Work It Out. After these albums proved relatively unsuccessful, the group went on a long hiatus, though they never officially broke up. The group reunited in 2000 with many of the original members (but not the Calloway brothers) and released the album 15th Avenue two years later. Since then, the group has toured sporadically, most recently with a lineup that includes Belinda Lipscomb, Kenneth Gant, Melvin Gentry, Bo Watson, and Bobby Lovelace, with Bill Simmons sometimes joining as well. The Real Thing - Can You Feel The Force 1979 Rare Video The Real Thing - http://theofficialrealthing.com, a Liverpool based vocal group, had its origins in the Merseybeat boom of the 1960s. Lead Singer Eddie Amoo was a former band member of The Chants, whose beat singles gathered considerable critical acclaim, although they failed to chart. After continuing to record for various record labels, the band name was eventually dropped. Re-labelled as The Real Thing, and with brother Chris Amoo, Ray Lake and Dave Smith on board, they got their big break following an appearance on the "Opportunity Knocks" ITV talent show. Original members of the group who appeared on "Opportunity Knocks" were, Chris Amoo, Kenny Davis (deceased) Dave Smith, Eddie Ankrah, and Ray Lake(deceased). They were spotted by an ex-Radio Luxembourg DJ, Tony Hall, who played a significant part in their early career development. Even so, success was not immediate, and contracts they signed with a couple of major record labels came to nothing. Then, in 1975, they signed to Pye Records. Touring as backing singers with David Essex for a spell also helped to increase their profile. With a song written and produced by Ken Gold and Mick Denne, The Real Thing finally emerged in 1976 when "You to me are Everything" sailed up to the number one slot in the UK Singles Chart. The same song would be re-released as 'The Decade Remix' in 1986 and achieve an even higher UK chart position of number three, being remixed by Froggy, Simon Harris and KC. This first success led to nine hits on Pye over a three year period, including "Can't Get By Without You", and "Can You Feel The Force", both of which were top five success stories. Mai Tai - Female Intuition HQ Rare Video!!!!!!! Dutch pop-act Mai Tai (named after a tropical cocktail) was formed in 1983 by the successful Dutch record producers Eric van Tijn and Jochem Fluitsma. With the three former backing-singers Jetty Wheels, Mildred Douglas and Caroline De Windt they created the most successful Dutch soul and disco pop-act in history so far. Their debut-single 'Keep On Dancin' (1983) was only a hit in the Dutch clubs. In the summer of 1984 they released a second single: 'What Goes On'. It became their first hit in the Dutch Top 40, peaking at number 30. Following tracks like 'Body And Soul' and 'Am I Losing You Forever' also hit the charts, but never managed to reach the top-20 in Holland. Whodini - Magic's Wand HQ RARE VIDEO!!!!! Whodini is a hip hop group formed in the 1980s, made up of Jalil Hutchins, Ecstasy (John Fletcher) and Grandmaster Dee (Drew Carter). Along with Run-DMC and The Fat Boys, Whodini was among the first hip-hop groups to cultivate a high-profile national following for hip-hop music and made significant inroads on Urban radio. The Brooklyn, New York-based trio consisted of vocalist-chief lyricist Jalil Hutchins; co-vocalist John Fletcher, aka Ecstasy, who tended to wear a Zorro-style hat as his trademark; and DJ Drew Carter, aka Grandmaster Dee. Contemporaries of Run-D.M.C., they were managed by Russell Simmons, brother of Joseph "Run" Simmons. The group signed with London-based indie Jive Records in 1982; they enjoyed a string of hits, mostly charting on Urban/R&B stations. The bulk of production on its releases was done by Larry Smith, a bass player who also handled much of Run-D.M.C.'s early work. In keeping with 1980s trends, Whodini's cuts tended to be synthesizer-driven with a heavy electronic drumbeat. The sampling technology that became identified with hip-hop music hadn't really become prominent during Whodini's early days, and its works were thoroughly original compositions. "Haunted House of Rock" was its first single, a whimsical Halloween-themed number. Synth-pop pioneer Thomas Dolby produced another of its early singles, "Magic's Wand," which was originally conceived as an advertisement for prominent radio jock Mr. Magic, who worked for New York's WBLS. The group culled a female audience with such relationship-themed cut as "Friends" and "One Love." Backstage partying was extolled in the mildly controversial "I'm a Ho." "Fugitive" was guitar-driven funk. Tags: Whodini Magics Wand 80's oldschool electro disco funk |
