Free Aung San Suu Kyi! Aung San Suu Kyi www.USCampaignForBurma.org About Her "Daw Aung San Suu Kyi (pronounced Daw Aung Sawn Sue Chee) is one of the world's most renown freedom fighters and advocates of nonviolence, having served as the figurehead for Burma's struggle for democracy since 1988. Born on June 19th, 1945 to Burma's independence hero, Aung San, Aung San Suu Kyi was educated in Burma, India, and the United Kingdom. Her father was assassinated when she was only two years old. In 1988, while living in London, she returned to Burma to nurse her dying mother, and was plunged into the country's nationwide uprising that had just begun. Joining the newly-forming National League for Democracy political party, Aung San Suu Kyi gave numerous speeches calling for freedom and democracy. The military regime responded to the uprising with brute force, shooting and otherwise killing up to 10,000 demonstrators, students, women, children, and others in a mater of months. Unable to maintain its grip on power, the regime was forced to call for a general election in 1990. Aung San Suu Kyi As Aung San Suu Kyi began to campaign for the NLD, she and many others were detained by the regime. Despite being held under house arrest, the NLD went on to win a staggering 82% of the seats in parliament. The regime never recognized the results. Aung San Suu Kyi has been in and out of arrest ever since. She was held from 1989-1995, and again from 2000-2002. She was again arrested and placed behind bars in May 2003 after the Depayin massacre, during which her envoy was attacked and up to 100 of her supporters were beaten to death by the regime's cronies. She has moved from prison back into house arrest in late 2003 and has been held there ever since. She has won numerous international awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize, Sakharov Prize from the European Parliament, United States Presidential Medal of Freedom, and Jawaharlal Nehru Award from India. She has called on people around the world to join the struggle for freedom in Burma, saying 'Please use your liberty to promote ours.'" 8.8.08 - Global Burma Day August 8th marks the 20th anniversary of Burma's largest national democratic uprising, when millions bravely marched through the streets, and nearly toppled the military regime if they had not been brutally massacred. It is also on the day that China, the #1 supporter of Burma's military junta, will open the Beijing Olympics. Please help us as we join together for a Global Day of Actions for Burma - to honor those who have struggled for freedom in Burma and to demand China end its support for Burma's dictators. Mourning Mist OMA The thing I'll miss the most is her beautiful smile, The way she held me when saying hello, The poetry she wrote The winters in Belleayre The times we all shared The love The love The love Oma had a light that radiated beyond her smile, Beyond her silver hair Beyond her embrace Beyond one poem can describe, She was indescribable, because no one else I know embodies this kind of love, The kind of love that was there for you with a whisper goodnight. With her magic touch that swirled around your ears, Calming your pounding heart into a deep rest, Knowing there was, is, and always will be, an Oma, our Oma, there for us, She always will be Two Birds fly high in the sky now, Two Nestle their bodies in the open sea, The Oma who just left us all, Was welcomed by our dear Poppy, A pair can mean a lot of things, But none are ever as clear, As the couple Jack and Anne, A love so tremendously sincere, They'll fly together into the sky, Chirping to the sun their endless love, Devotion in heaven now, The dreamtime up above, So water may fall with her last heartbeat, And a Mourning Mist may appear, But in the end our Oma was always so sincere. She held strong to the end of time, With which she was surrounded by three, Loving children holding each other up, The educators of Bravery, And twirling swirling dreams will come to us all, In memory of our dear friend, With silver hair and a perfect smile, Our dearest Oma's legacy will never end... Chevron Leave Burma! Dear fellow Burmese and friends of Burma, In New York City, there will be a "Chevron Leave Burma" petition drive on coming Saturday Feb. 23 between 10 AM -- 12 noon at 43rd Street, United Nations' Ralph Bunche Park and Sunday Feb 24 between 1PM-3PM at Queens Mall on Queens Blvd. in Queens. National Council of the Union of Burma (NCUB) has begun requesting Burmese and friends of Burma to help collect petitions to urge the U.S. Senate to pressure Chevron to leave Burma. There are apparently two Burma sanction bills, one in the House of Representatives and one in the Senate. The House bill is ready to pressure Chevron to leave Burma. The Senate bill doesn't mention anything about Chevron or Yadana pipeline that it has invested in Burma. Why not?, we asked. As we all know, the military generals continue to kill our people. We have always asked the world to help. United States has been a true supporter in our cause. But I would say not enough. According to a French expert on Yadana pipeline, which is operated by Total+Chevron+PTTEP+MOGE, the gas sold in 2006 was around $2.5 billion. Yes, everyone....it is $2.5 billion from this Yadana pipeline alone! There is also another pipeline called Yetagon pipeline. We don't yet know how much SPDC is getting from it. However, an article from Watershed, People's Forum on Ecology, says "According to the 30-year gas supply agreement signed in 1995 between MOGE and PTT, Thailand will pay between US$200 (to) 400 million per year to SLORC." Yadana is known to be the largest pipeline in Burma. It is being operated by Total of France with about 31 percent share, Chevron of U.S. with about 28 percent, PTTEP of Thailand with about 25 percent, and SPDC owned Myanmar Oil and Gas Exploration (MOGE) with about 15 percent. Now, we can all calculate and give an estimation of how much the regime SPDC (formerly known as SLORC) has received so far from this gas project. In addition, SPDC gets millions of dollars for signing contracts. At least $15 million per contract and per pipeline and this $ amount could be doubled, I was told. With all the money SPDC gets, no wonder they can purchase MIG-29, China made military trucks and weapons, building factory to produce more weapons, and killing peaceful citizens and respectful monks of Burma. Not to mention other human rights crime committed against our people, such as forced relocation and forced labor. Therefore, we strongly need to urge U.S. Senators to back the House bill to pressure Chevron to leave Burma as soon as possible. The regime in Burma doesn't wait for anyone but rather rapidly creating their own power by killing our people. If we waited I can't imagine what would happen to our people under dictator Gen. Than Shwe and his cronies. We request you....... PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION TODAY!!! If you want to sign the petition please let me know or find out if there is any other coordinator in your area are collecting "Chevron Leave Burma" signatures. We hope everyone can join in for this action. Please urge your family members, friends, and neighbors to sign. No more waiting, sign for Burma!! This is the time to ACT!! Thank you. Respectfully, Moe Chan **************************** There are coordinators in other cities and states. There are more than one coordinator in some states. Htin Kyaw was arrested by Burmese authorities in August following his protests against the increase in fuel prices. He was prosecuted under Article 505—the instigation or destruction of stability or government. Two university students, Nay Lin and Zin Lin Aung, and a human rights activist, Myo Thant, have joined Htin Kyaw, who is in the third week of his hunger strike, sources in Rangoon said. The detainees are staging the hunger strikes because of the prison's inhumane conditions, such as the lack of sufficient food, medicine, medical treatment and the use of torture, the source said. Soe Htun, an 88 Generation Student in Rangoon, told The Irrawaddy on Thursday from his hiding place that Nay Lin and Zin Lin Aung started their hunger protests on December 7. Myo Thant began his hunger strike on December 10. Soe Htun said he is worried about the detainees' health since medical care in the prison is inadequate, and the International Committee of the Red Cross is not allowed to enter the prison or help the prisoners. Nay Lin, Zin Lin Aung and Myo Thant were arrested by authorities for their activities in support of the September protests in Rangoon. Sources said their health is poor, and Myo Thant and Zin Lin Aung were sent to the prison's hospital. Pyone Pyone Aye, who visited the prison to see her husband, Thet Oo, said his health condition is not good, and she takes him medicine because there is insufficient medicine in the prison. A political prisoner, Thet Oo has been detained for 11 years. He was sentenced to 26 years imprisonment. Pyone Pyone Aye said she met with political prisoner Han Win Aung, who contracted tuberculosis in the prison and was hospitalized once in November. He is serving a seven-year sentence. "His health is bad," she said. "He looks thin and weak. He often vomits, which contains blood. He didn't receive good treatment. He should be released and have tests with a doctor." The UN special rapporteur on human rights, Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, recently published a report on the September crackdown. The report concluded that up to 4,000 people were arrested, compared to the official count of 2,927 and between 500 and 1,000 people were "still detained at the time of writing," including 106 women, of whom six were nuns." PEACE-WALK FOR FREEDOM OF BURMA INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN for FREEDOM of AUNG SAN SUU KYI and BURMA www.ICFAB.org Press release Oct 11, 2007 Long March and Hunger Strike Peace Pagoda, Grafton, NY to UN Headquarters, NYC The current human rights situation in Burma is ghastly, with the brutal Burmese regime (SPDC) slaughtering and incarcerating peaceful Buddhist monks, nuns, and civilians as they peacefully demonstrated for peace and freedom. In solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Burma, we Burmese in exile, along with our allies from around the world, are launching a walk for the peace and freedom of Burma. Along with members of the International Peace Walkers and the Japanese Buddhist nun Jun Yasuda, we will start walking from the Peace Pagoda in Grafton, near Albany, New York, on Saturday, October 13, 2007, and arrive on October 24 at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City. Then we will stage a hunger strike in front of the United Nations and the Chinese Embassy, on alternating days, to call world attention to the desperate need in our homeland for peace, justice, and freedom—none of which will ever come to be as long as the SPDC regime is in power. By committing the crimes of killing, torturing, and arresting Buddhist monks, the regime insults the entire Śāsana (the teachings of Buddha) and all the people of Burma. The recent crackdown in Pakokku city was abominable, beyond understanding in a country that follows Buddha's doctrine. Soldiers raided and attacked Buddhist temples at dark of night, arrested and tortured peaceful Buddhist monks by capturing them with a noose and tying them to a pole in public. Others were killed, their corpses dumped in the jungle. SPDC is a criminal regime. The world has now witnessed it treating civilians, monks, students, members of the NLD party—which won a landslide victory in the elections of May 1990 but has never been permitted to take its rightful place—and members of other opposition parties abominably. The soil of Burma is scarlet with the blood of monks, students, and ordinary people. The people of Burma have suffered for decades the cruelty of this regime, and the world has stood by, wringing its hands. The time for inaction is long past! We are launching this walk urging the UN's immediate intervention. The following are our demands. 1. Immediate effective intervention by the United Nations to stop the atrocities against the Burmese people, using UN peacekeeping forces if necessary. 2. Immediate release of all Buddhist monks, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, student leaders, and all political prisoners. 3. The institution of a process that will transition the country to democracy, monitored by a UN-appointed international committee. We invite everyone to join our walk for peace and freedom of Burma, whether for an hour, a day, a week, or the entire time.
