The 1960 Democratic Convention was held from July 11-15 at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. The primary candidates were John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and Adlai Stevenson. Part One covers the first two days with Kennedy & Johnson fighting for delegates. This was the days before state primaries and deals were made behind closed doors. Johnson wildly waves his arms and Kennedy comes through with rapier wit. Adlai Stevenson makes a brave last speech but we'll see Kennedy emerge as the leader. Unboxing My New iMac - Part 3 Here is Part 3 (of 3 total) as I unbox my new iMac. This part deals more with a summary of the programs thats included, including iLife 08. I run thru them pretty fast but it will perhaps give a newbie an idea of what they are like. As I say, I much prefer the "older" iMovie HD 06 as it has many features and plug-ins thats missing in the current IM 08. However, you can decide whats best for you. Unboxing My New iMac - Part 2 Here is Part 2 (of 3 total) as I unbox my new iMac. This part will deal more with it's initial setup and understanding where your different cords will be placed. If you are new to Macs, this will help you get started and what to expect when unboxing your computer for the first time. A couple things that need further explanation: the sockets along the back of the screen are always "hot". If you should plug in a hard drive that cannot be manually turned off, it will always stay On - - even when the iMac is turned Off! Also, the FW 800/400 adapter came from TheNerds.net. Look for Part 3 of my series to get an overview of the programs that are included. Taped: August 6, 2008 Tags: 20" Kerry Decker Duo DVD firewire flat iMac OSX screen unboxing USB |

Kerry Decker TV Show: The Adam Computer (1986) More highlights from my "NightLife Show" which ran on local cable TV in FL from 1980-1986. This is one of my final NightLife TV Shows that made it to air. This program shows the revolutionary Adam Computer in it's final days. This program is not complete as the original videotape loses it's tracking before the end. However, since it's one of the few programs devoted to the departed Adam, I wanted to show it anyway. I had to read off the specs as I didn't know what any of this was back then. The Coleco Adam was an attempt in the early 1980s by American toy manufacturer Coleco to follow on the success of its ColecoVision game console. The Adam was not very successful, partly because of early production problems. In its favor, the Adam had a large software library from the start. It was derived from and compatible with the ColecoVision's software and accessories, and, in addition, the popular CP/M operating system was available as an option. Its price gave a complete system: a 64 KB RAM computer, tape drive, letter-quality printer, and software including the Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom video game. The IBM PCjr sold for $669 but included no peripherals, and although the popular Commodore 64 sold for around $200, its price was not much lower after the purchase of a printer, tape or disk drive, and software. Like many home computers of its day, it used a television set for its monitor. The SmartWriter electronic typewriter loads when the system is turned on. In this mode, the system operates just like a typewriter, printing letters as soon as the user types them. Pressing the Escape/WP key puts SmartWriter into word processor mode, which functions similar to a modern word processor. However, sales were weak, especially after the technical issues became obvious. Coleco lost $35 million in the fourth quarter of 1984 as returns flooded in. Officially, Coleco blamed "manuals which did not offer the first-time user adequate assistance." Coleco reintroduced Adam with a new instruction manual, lower price, and a $500 college scholarship along with each unit for use by a young child, to be paid when the child reached college. Less than 100,000 units ultimately sold. The Adam was discontinued in 1985, less than two years after its introduction. As this was the NightLife Show in it's final year, you'll see new graphics for the titles and other things I changed not knowing that in several months, all of our local programming was going to be canceled. Unboxing My New iMac - Part 1 Recently, I upgraded my iMac G4 to the latest model. Part 1 covers the time of it's arrival to it's initial set-up. I have used iMacs since the early ones. From the iMac DV - to the iMac G4 - and now the iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo with a 20" flat screen. You see the actual moment of delivery by the DHL driver! I unpack the box and you'll see how to add extra memory as I go from 1 to 2 GB of RAM. I set it up (SO easy!) and I'm ready to roll. I've used iMacs to do my professional work and YouTube videos. This model includes a direct link to YouTube and takes care of all the specs. This is truly a wonderful machine! Part 1 covers the unboxing and inital set-up. Parts 2 & 3 covers some of the software uses and what to expect with a computer of this type. Excuse my look & the dogs barking. It was delivered earlier than expected and the camera had to roll! The New York Hat (1912) From 1912, here is a favorite film of mine starring Mary Pickford and Lionel Barrymore - "The New York Hat". It was filmed in Ft. Lee, New Jersey! It is a short film produced by Biograph in 1912. Based on a scenario by Anita Loos, it was directed by D.W. Griffith and stars Mary Pickford, Lionel Barrymore and Lillian Gish. It is considered one of the most notable of the Biograph shorts and is perhaps the best known example of Pickford's early work. The story is simple: Mollie (Mary Pickford) leads a cheerless, impoverished life, largely because of her stern, miserly father. Her mother is mortally ill, but before dying, she gives the minister(Lionel Barrymore) some money with which to buy her daughter the "finery" her father has always forbid her. Mollie is delighted when the minister presents her with a fashionable New York hat she has been longing for, but village gossips misinterpet the minister's intentions and spread malicious rumors. Mollie becomes a social pariah, and her father tears up the beloved hat in a rage. All ends well however, after the minister produces a letter from Mollie's mother about the money she left the minister to spend on Mollie. I have always enjoyed this film because of the great cast. Mary Pickford is young & beautiful in it. A young dashing Lionel Barrymore is the minister. Its rare we've seen him at this age long before arthritis set in and was in a wheel chair for the rest of his life. Both of the Gish sisters are seen as well. Finally, even Mack Sennet makes a cameo appearance as well! Also, since American Biograph was afraid of piracy (even way back then!), they incorporated their "AB" logo into the film itself. (Look closely on the back wall at Mary's house and you'll see the Biograph logo pasted on the wall!) I have had the 8mm film in my collection for decades. Its becoming the worse for wear with mold and difficult to project. I have edited it down a bit to fit into YouTube time. I mostly cut out people walking in and out of doors and down the street. I hope you'll enjoy this great little film. Released: December 5, 1912 Tags: Kerry Decker New York Mary Pickford Lionel Barrymore DW Griffith Gish Hat Mack Sennett silent movie 1912 |

Cornwall NY (Memorial Day 1920) Cornwall, NY is a small town located 52 miles North of New York City on the West side of the Hudson River. My Aunt & Uncle lived there until the late 1960s. Here is an old movie as the town prepared for a Memorial Day Parade back in 1920. Of special interest is the presentation of a captured German gun by the French to the officials of Cornwall, NY. PS: The cameraman sure enjoyed using his circular iris attachment over the lens! Filmed: May 31, 1920 Tags: Kerry Decker Cornwall New York NY Memorial Day Parade 1920 vintage marching |

How To Use a Movie Camera (1948) Here is another film that I rescued from the trash at our public library. This is an instructional film showing us the basics of shooting a home movie. Using "humor", it takes us through the basics of Exposure, Focusing & Panning. The clothes, the cameras and the acting are pure 1940s retro! This is very low budget but helpful for the time. As I mentioned previously on a few other films, I was driving through town and as I drove past the public library, I saw an incredible sight! Someone at the rear of the library was throwing out 16mm film cans hand over hand! They were converting over to videotape & for some reason - decided to just throw out the film. Needless to say - I stopped, opened my trunk, and got as many as I could! This is one of those films. Tags: Kerry Decker 8mm home movies instruction camera 1948 |

The Very First Motion Picture (1889) Here is a short video production I've done especially for YouTube members. It shows the first experimental movie that Thomas Edison made in 1889. In 1878, British photographer Eadweard Muybridge made a series of still photographs of a horse that when viewed in sequence, appeared to be galloping. Edison felt this was too cumbersome for practical use and soon developed a system for "motion" pictures, based on his wax cylinder for phonographs. Thus you will see the two short sequences still in existance of the very first American motion picture from 1889. Tags: Kerry Decker Thomas Edison Muybridge movies motion 1878 1889 history |

The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake Here's a portion of another old 1950s documentary - the story of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Photography was invented only a few decades before this & motion pictures were in their infancy as well. This story is told with those old movies & photos. This was a major earthquake that struck San Francisco, CA and the coast of Northern California at 5:14 A.M. on Wednesday, April 18, 1906. The most widely accepted estimate for the magnitude of the earthquake is a moment magnitude (Mw) of 7.8; however, other values have been proposed from 7.7 to as high as 8.3. The main shock epicenter occurred offshore about 2 miles (3 km) from the city, near Mussel Rock. It ruptured along the San Andreas Fault both northward and southward for a total length of 296 miles (477 km). Shaking was felt from Oregon to Los Angeles, and inland as far as central Nevada. The earthquake and resulting fire is remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the United States. The death toll from the earthquake and resulting fire, estimated to be above 3,000, represents the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California's history. The economic impact has been compared with the more recent Hurricane Katrina disaster. I found this 16mm documentary some years ago when I was driving through town. As I drove past the public library, I saw an incredible sight! Someone at the rear of the library was throwing out 16mm film cans hand over hand! They were converting over to videotape & for some reason - decided to just throw out the film. Needless to say - I stopped, opened my trunk, and got as many as I could! This is one of those films. Hurricane Diane / Floods (Aug 1955) Some years ago, I was driving through town and as I drove past the public library, I saw an incredible sight! Someone at the rear of the library was throwing out 16mm film cans hand over hand! They were converting over to videotape & for some reason - decided to just throw out the film. Needless to say - I stopped, opened my trunk, and got as many as I could! Here is one of those films. With all the floods & tornadoes hitting the Midwest USA in Summer of 2008, I thought this clip would be a good start. Its about the flooding in the Northeast that took place after Hurricane Diane in the 1950s. This is one of the many "school films" that we all endured & forced to watch when we were growing up. Adding a Hard Drive to Your DVR Recently I came across some interesting information about how easy it is to add an external hard drive to a digital video recorder. Several brands of hard drives are suggested as well as an e-SATA cord. I show how a hard drive can be added to a Scientific Atlanta DVR, but others may work as well. Have a pencil or pen ready so you can copy down the details and before long, you'll be able to greatly extend the recording capacity of your home DVR! Daytona Beach, Florida (B&W Video from 1978) Here is another B&W video clip I shot 30 years ago! To finish out the year, I took my portable Sony Betamax SLO-340 recorder over to Daytona Beach on the Atlantic Ocean to show off to my Northern friends how warm it was in Florida in December. After a brief introduction, you'll see the cars traveling on the sand. You'll also see swimmers, joggers, an airplane and a ship. I shot this video as I was still excited about being able to shoot videotape outdoors on battery power. (You can see a brief demo of the Sony SLO-340 on my previous listing.) Portable Sony Betamax SLO-340 (1978) Here is a small portion of a black & white video I made way back in 1978 showing off my new Sony SLO-340 "portable" Betamax. I was taping an air show in Kissimmee, FL and during a lull in the show, I turned the camera around and shot a few moments of my new VCR. The SLO-340 was somewhat of a commercial machine released the previous year. As I enjoy shooting video outdoors, this was my first opportunity to do so. Weighing a hefty twenty pounds, it required a complicated hook up to use a non-Sony camera. (I had an RCA B&W camera.) I hope you enjoy this original black & white videotape shot 30 years ago!! Terminal Tower & Cleveland, OH (1989) On my travels to the Northern region of the US, I stopped by to see my friend Ray (also known as Videohollic2008a on YouTube). He took me on a quick tour of his hometown, Cleveland, Ohio. Traveling on I-90, we pass Lake Erie and the Cleveland Stadium. We see the future site of the Society Center (completed in 1992). Also, we visit the Soldiers & Sailors Monument in the Public Square. This 125' tall structure is Cleveland's memorial to the Civil War and was dedicated on July 4, 1894. We also see the BP Building, across the street. Of main interest is the Terminal Tower, also in the Public Square. This 708' structure was completed in 1928 - two years before the train terminal itself. It would remain the world's tallest structure (outside of New York) until 1967. The view from the top is now very rare as the observation area has been closed to the public since the terrorist attacks on 9/11/2001. We finish the tour of the city by driving on a section of Interstate 90 known as "Dead Man's Curve". Heritage, USA - after the fall (1989) Here is a short video I made years ago on my way up North to visit family. As I was traveling through the Carolina's, I saw signs along the road still advertising "Heritage, USA" which had recently closed. (To those who do not know or remember, Heritage was a sprawling Christian theme park & resort founded by televangelists Jim & Tammy Faye Bakker back in 1978. It was 2nd only to DisneyWorld as a vacation destination in the US. By the late 1980s, many problems befell the park and it's founders. Heritage USA was finally forced to close in 1989.) Out of curiosity, I decided to see what it looked like. There was no one at the main gate and I freely traveled inside. I shot the few minutes of videotape that you see here. There were only a few workers around and no one stopped or questioned me. I felt odd being there, so after I shot this tape, I left. To those who do remember Heritage USA in Ft. Mill, SC, it was once a bustling retreat for many and also housed a large television & early cable TV facility broadcasting Christian programming 20 years ago. I am making no judgements in presenting this other than a look back at a well-known vacation destination - after the fall. Originally shot on SuperVHS. Abraham Lincoln's Tomb (2003) Some people believe that Abraham Lincoln is buried at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. Not so! Here is part of a home video I shot while visiting my kids in Illinois. Lincoln's Tomb is in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Illinois, and is the final resting place of 16th President of the United States Abraham Lincoln, his wife Mary Todd Lincoln, and three of their four sons. The monument is owned and administered by the State of Illinois as Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site. On April 15, 1865, the day President Lincoln died, a group of Springfield citizens formed the National Lincoln Monument Association and spearheaded a drive for funds to construct a memorial or tomb. At the request of Robert Todd Lincoln, the President's only surviving son, the body was moved to its final resting place, a cement vault 10 feet below the surface of the burial room. In 1930-1931 the State reconstructed the interior of the memorial. Rededicated in the latter year by President Hoover, it has undergone little change since that time. The tomb is in the center of a 12 1/2 acre plot. Constructed of Massachusetts granite, it has a rectangular base surmounted by a 117-foot-high obelisk and a semicircular entrance way. A bronze reproduction of sculptor Gutzon Borglum's head of Lincoln in the U.S. Capitol rests on a pedestal in front of the entrance way. The burial room features black and white marble walls and a ceiling of gold leaf. At its center stands the cenotaph, a 7-ton block of reddish marble inscribed with Lincoln's name and the years he lived. It marks the approximate location of the burial vault. Nine flags are arranged in a semicircle around the cenotaph. Seven of them—the State flags of Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois—commemorate the homes of Lincoln and his ancestors. The eighth and ninth are the Stars and Stripes and the Presidential flag. The inscription "Now he belongs to the ages," reputedly spoken by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton at the time of Lincoln's death, is inscribed in the wall above the U.S. Flag.
