Duo 4500-year-old reproduction lyre & pipes This is a duet between the reconstructed lyre of ur and some reconstructed silver pipes found in the same grave. Although the lyre strings didn't survive the intervening years, we can reconstruct a musical scale from the position of the holes in the pipes. The original lyre and pipes were excavated by Sir Leonard Woolley at Ur, Mesopotamia. They were deposited in museums at Baghdad and Philadelphia. The replica of the Lyre was made by Andy Lowings and friends. The Silver pipes were evaluated and made by Bo Lawergren. I made this video to support the Lyre of Ur project at http://www.lyre-of-ur.com You can see a much higher-quality version at http://stage6.divx.com/user/Mark_the_Harp/video/1226321/4500-year-old-Pipes-and-Lyre Tags: lyre iraq baghdad antique BC harp |

Squire Woods Lamentation - Celtic Harp tune by Carolan My arrangement of Squire Woods' Lamentation on the Refusal of his Halfpence by O'Carolan. In 1722 Ireland ran out of low-value copper coins, and William Woods was given licence by English parliament to produce them. The Irish didn't like this idea and boycotted the coinage. This piece was written the same year to commemorate the boycott. This video was recorded in high-definition with a Canon XH-A1 camcorder, and edited in Sony Vegas and Adobe Audition. I exported a standard-definition version which is the version you see here. If you want to see better-looking versions and have firefox installed, you can go to http://tinyurl.com/2bqsgf (standard definition) or http://tinyurl.com/3xv4p3 (high definition) If you want to see what all the fuss was about, here's a page about the "Woods Halfpenny": http://tinyurl.com/3chgs6 Enjoy! Si Bheag Si Mhor O'Carolan celtic harp tune My arrangement was inspired by the bluebells in our local wood - where I recorded this version. The flowers are beautiful and I hope you enjoy the music. Si Bheag Si Mhor is about a battle between two tribes of fairies - and the bluebell forest seems appropriate. I've used "bell-like" sounds in the music. You can get a version with higher-quality pictures and sound at http://www.vimeo.com/730771 which you can also download to keep on your machine if you like. Epic of Gilgamesh with 4500-year-old Lyre (extract) A performance of part of the Epic of Gilgamesh. This piece uses the newly-reconstructed and completed Lyre of Ur, which was found in a grave in ancient Mesopotamia. The original instrument was destroyed when the Baghdad museum was looted, and this reconstruction uses original materials - gut strings, pink sandstone, lapis lazuli, gold. The string tuning is based on pipes which were found in the same grave, and which appear in another video extract which we'll upload shortly. Andy Lowings reconstructed the Lyre with the help of an international team, and the extract you see here is performed by Bill Taylor and Jennifer Sturdy - Jennifer wears a headress and jewellery based on contemporary designs, also trimmed with gold. This video is a taste of a series of music, dance and performance being written especially for this instrument, which is gaining great interest in the academic and music world. If you are interested in having the team bring along this stunning instrument and perform for your organisation, please call Andy Lowings on +44 7709 268426 or in the UK, 07709 268426, and he will be happy to talk to you. I made this video as part of my own contribution to the project. I used Neumann mics into a Soundcraft mixer, with Sony widescreen video cameras, and edited it on Adobe Premiere pro. I hope you enjoy the video! If you want to see a higher quality version, it will soon be on the Lyre of Ur site. In the meantime you can find it here: http://www.danceofdelight.com/gallery/Lyre_of_ur_videos/gilg_final.html Tags: Lyre Gilgamesh Epic Music Narration Poem Ur Baghdad Harp Ancient Mesopotamia |

Blue Cockade - traditional celtic ballad Performed live in the studio by Slainte in 2002. There are seven of us now but I hope you like this version from a while ago. This Irish rebel song is about the "press gangs" that used to roam the countryside recruiting young men. The words which Joe and Lynne sing represent in turn the man's point of view, and then the woman's. The full text is below: -- (Joe) Twas on a Monday morning as I crossed o'er the moss / I little thought of 'listing, till the soldiers I did cross / Their company enticed me to drink their health all round / And the bounty they gave me, five guineas and a crown -- (Joe) My head was full of drink, love, and I didn't think of you / And now I'm forced to go and join the orange and the blue / Our ship it waits at anchor, to take the flowing tide / I'll return love, in the spring time, where I'll make you my bride -- (Lynne) So early the next morning, before the break of day / The captain gave his orders, and my love he marched away / All in your ranks and files boys, all on your native shore / Fare Thee Well love, you're the one that I adore -- (Lynne) And I hope you never prosper, and I hope you always fail / In everything you venture, I hope you ne'er do well / And the very ground you walk on, may the grass refuse to grow / Since you've been the very cause of my sorrow, grief and woe (Instrumental) -- (All - chorus) Well, it's true my love has 'listed, and he wears the blue cockade / He is a handsome young man, likewise a rovin' blade / He is a handsome young man, and he's gone to serve the king / While my very heart is aching all for the love of him -- (Joe) Twas on a Monday morning as I crossed o'er the moss / I little thought of 'listing, till the soldiers I did cross / Their company enticed me to drink their health all round / And the bounty they gave me, five guineas and a crown Tags: irish ballad song music harp guitar slainte acoustic celtic |

La Partida - played on Paraguayan harp Well - actually it's called "Quiero ser tu sombra" (wanna be your shadow), apparently by Hector Quattromanos and Zulema Alcayaga. I first heard this piece on the web, and learned it from there, complete with the wrong title! Anyway, apologies to Hector and Zulema! It's such a great piece - I love the slinkiness of it (if that's not a word, it is now). The Paraguayan harp is amazing - the sound on this recording is just noise-reduced, no other audio treatment - you can hear the sparkly treble and deep bass. The harp has guitar-type tuners (machine heads) which can be a bit fiddly near the middle of the harp, where it curves inwards. You hardly have to touch the strings to make it work - and when you play loud, the strings have the characteristic "twang" which you can use for special effects. I bought it at the Stamford Harp Festival and there's a rolled-up banknote in the end of the harp at the top - I can't get it out so who knows what it's worth! Apparently people would put banknotes in between the strings or into the top, as a tip. If you're a harpist, you might spot that the strings don't follow the conventional colours because Paraguayan harps have the C string in blue, and the F string in red, the reverse of other harps. I'm playing it in my annex, which was a bakery serving the local houses, built around 1790 - that's the bread oven in the stone wall behind me. This is another of my late-night recordings, and it's the first complete take - so there's the odd rough bit. The arrangement and video is my copyright. You are welcome to learn and play the arrangement if you like it - but please credit me if you play it in public. If you like it, I'll post more music. The video was recorded using a 3-CCD camera direct to hard disk, and I used Cool Edit Pro to noise reduce the audio and Adobe Premiere Pro for picture correction. If you want a higher-quality file to download and put on your computer, leave me a message and I'll send you the link. Tags: Partida Venezuela Venezuelan Paraguayan Harp Music |

Carolan's Dream - played on celtic harp Turlough O'Carolan was an irish harpist who lived in the mid-1600s and wrote pieces for the people he met and stayed with - playing music in exchange for hospitality. Tradition has it that the harp was played last thing at night, before people went to bed. The building I'm playing it in was a bakery built around 1790, serving the local houses. The bread oven is in the stone wall behind me, and the building has a new floor and triple-glazing on the windows. It's a great mixture of old and new and a great place to play this music. Appropriately, I recorded this piece very late one night, and just went with the first take so the playing has the odd rough bits. I like to think that's authentic - apparently Carolan never played the same way twice. Bet he never had as much trouble as I did finding DivX codecs, either! Only the melodies survive, so I've done this arrangement myself and I'm playing it here on a Pilgrim gut-strung harp. The arrangement and video is my copyright. You are welcome to learn and play the arrangement (by ear - I haven't written it down!) if you like it - but please credit me if you play it in public. If you like it, I'll post more music. To make the recording I used a Sony 3-CCD camera direct to hard disk, with one audio take, noise-reduced in Cool Edit Pro, with Adobe Premiere Pro to edit the visuals together. If you want a higher-quality file to download and keep on your computer, just send me a message. Tags: Irish Clarsach Music Celtic Harp O'Carolan Carolan |

Wild celtic bagpipe piece Turn up the volume for this one! Another live tv studio session with Heath on pipes, Joe on Guitars, Alan on Bouzouki, Lynne on Bodhran, Paul on Bass and me on the drum. Great fun! For those who've noticed the guitars sound a bit out of tune - you're right. It was a really hot day in the studio and we were struggling to keep anything in tune for more than a minute. We still think this is worth putting on YouTube. A few years on we have an additional band member and we're a lot better. Come and see us!
