Hollywood stars Brad Pitt and George Clooney sailed to the festival to present the newest movie the two are co-staring in. Here's more. STORY: Brad Pitt and George Clooney star in the new Coen Bros. film "Burn After Reading" where spy movie meets slapstick farce. The movie is about two Washington gym employees who get caught up in the cloak-and-dagger world of international espionage, with results both daft and deadly. Clooney admits he regularly plays a fool for the brothers. [George Clooney, Actor]: "I've done three films with them and they call it my trilogy of idiots." The 47-year-old plays a nervous, twitchy federal marshal. His extra-marital affairs bring him into contact with a gym instructor, played by Brad Pitt, desperately seeking to extort money from a sacked CIA analyst whose memoirs go missing. [Brad Pitt, Actor]: "After reading the part, which they said was hand-written for myself, I was not sure if I should be flattered or insulted." Well, the film might be a tongue in cheek send-up of the Washington government community the actors are on a more serious mission, they take every opportunity to highlight the genocide in Darfur. [George Clooney, Actor]: "Well, for Darfur it's important to get a chance and talk about it wherever we go, that's all we're trying to do you know and wherever we go, we're trying to find a place where there's a lot of access, there's a lot of cameras, so we can talk about it. It's an ongoing problem that continues." And since Venice is something of a canal city, the actors sailed off style to get ready for the evening's premiere. Tags: ntd ntdtv news |

Thailand: Government House Siege Continues CHAN: Protests in the Thai capital continue today. Hundreds more protesters from the country's coastal provinces arrived at the Government House compound... to join the thousands who have stormed the prime minister's office. They're calling on the current administration to resign. Let's take a look. STORY: The crowd dwindled to 3,000 by Thursday morning from tens of thousands when the siege began on Tuesday. The People's Alliance for Democracy or PAD, has been appealing to protesters not to leave as riot police arrived to disperse the demonstrators. Dozens of police trucks were parked on nearby streets... and police doctors and ambulances were on stand-by at the police headquarters. The Thai prime minister ordered riot police to break up the demonstration by Wednesday, but police weren't able to get protest leaders off the streets in time. The nine protest leaders are charged with inciting unrest and trying to overthrow the seven-month-old government. They face up to 15 years behind bars. The PAD leader says protesters will not leave the Government House until the government resigns and a new constitution is drafted. [Chamlong Srimuang, PAD Leader]: "They know that they cannot apprehend all of us. So they aim for the leaders. But we are preparing three replacement leaders." The constitution was drawn up under an army-controlled administration after the military overthrew former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a 2006 coup. The PAD accuses the government elected in December of being an illegitimate arm of Thaksin, who's now in exile in London. Tags: ntd ntdtv news |

Market Report - Markets Eye Oil, Weak Economies CHAN: Asia stocks were mostly lower on Thursday with investors continuing to weigh signs of a weak global economy. China Mobile was a major loser in Hong Kong. One investment bank downgraded the shares to underweight citing a tougher industry landscape ahead for the nation's number one mobile phone carrier. Earlier this week China Mobile posted a 51 percent rise in profits but the company now faces increasing competition on its home soil. Esprit plummeted after posting disappointing earnings. The world's fifth largest fashion retailer missed earnings forecasts and cautioned investors about tougher times ahead. High fuel prices and a credit crunch are being felt at Japan's Toyota. The world's most profitable carmaker cut its sales forecast for by 7 percent. It expects to sell 9.7 million vehicles next year. Toyota says it's aiming to shift towards making more fuel efficient cars, especially in the United States. Tags: ntd ntdtv news |

Grease is the Word! CHAN: A major race has just come to a close in Athens, Greece. But what makes this trip different from most is that not a single penny was spent on fuel. Let's see how they did it. STORY: They've driven to Athens all the way from London - nothing too unusual about that - except these motors are running on reused cooking oil. Environmental enthusiasts - keen to promote the virtues of cheap and eco-friendly bio-fuels - have been taking part in a 4,000 kilometer rally across Europe. It sounds a little far-fetched but apparently it's very simple to convert your engine. [Ben Mayo, Fuel Converter System Designer]: "This is a converted engine, it looks much the same as a regular engine. There's a few minor adjustments, this is the heat exchanger - that is what heats the fuel up and make it nice and hot and ready for injection into the engine." The ten day mission involved some pretty good bargaining skills - the team managed to obtain used cooking oils from restaurant, cafes and fast-food joints along the way. [Andy Pag, Organizer, Grease to Greece]: "We have been surprised at how easy it has been. The problem has been actually finding places that have oil and arriving at the right moment before its been collected or taken away. But actually when people have had oil they have been really really willing to give it and let us have it. I mean it's a waste product for them so we are taking away their rubbish, really." It isn't the first time that organizer Andy Pag has taken part in such folly - last year he drove to Mali in western Africa in a truck powered by waste chocolate. [Andy Pag, Organizer, Grease to Greece]: "When I first put vegetable oil in the car I was really worried (I thought) Oh my god is it going to work? Is it going to blow the car up? I have now done over I think 6000 miles on vegetable oil and I have had absolutely no ill effects at all." So, what next for this experienced eco-traveler you might ask? Well, he's planning a globe-trotting adventure using aviation fuel made from recycled plastic bags. And if he happens to persuade a few people to convert to cooking oil then his mission will be all the more successful. Tags: ntd ntdtv news |

Film Director Launches Anti-fur Campaign CHAN: And now to Israel for a story about a film director who is launching a campaign to save the millions of animals who are being killed every year for their fur. STORY: After directing more than 500 commercials, including one inside the Russian space station Mir, TV director Yom Tov Moshe decided it's time to do something special to make the world a better place. [Yom Tov Moshe, Israeli TV Director]: "Imagine that all the media in the world will gather to help the communication. We are the leaders. The media is the leader. Let's use this power to do good and we are now in a chance to do that." Moshe is launching a campaign calling the people of the world to stop wearing clothes made of animal fur. [Yom Tov Moshe, Israeli TV Director]: "To kill a hundred chinchillas for one coat of a lady, this is disgusting. To kill 55 million animals, poor animals, sometimes they skin them alive while they are alive." Top Israeli artists and celebrities are already committed to participate. Animal rights activist Eti Altman came up with the idea for the campaign. For her it's a fulfillment of a life-long ambition. [Eti Altman, Spokeswoman, "Let the Animals Live"]: "My father manufactured fur coats. Back then I didn't realize that so many animals had to be killed to make just one coat. So this project is my way of setting the record straight." The goal is to have 500 of the world's most influential women join the campaign. Moshe hopes that very soon everybody, not only in Israel but all over the world, will be familiar with his new slogan. [Yom Tov Moshe, Israeli TV Director]: "Let's cross our fingers and say that soon we will see Hilary Clinton, the wife of Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Angelina Jolie, all the movie actresses, all the women in the world, all the children in the world raise their hand and say: ' Wearing a dead body... over my dead body.'" Our very own reporter, Linoy, already caught on. [Linoy Makram, NTD Reporter]: "Wearing a dead body... over my dead body. " NTD Israel. Tags: ntd ntdtv news |
