Volga Boatmen Song This was recorded at Kiev, a Russian restaurant in Beijing. This restaurant has superb food at reasonable prices, but its pride and joy is a world-class opera troupe from the Ukraine that performs a huge repertoire of Russian songs nightly. This is the work song of the Volga Boatmen, slaves who were forced to manually tow shipping boats up and down the Volga river, even against the current and through silt and ice. Monks Playing Guitar At the west end of Qinghai lake there is a peninsula called "Bird Island", where each year tens of thousands of birds come to lay their eggs in the springtime, some species even crossing the Himalayas to do so. Near Bird Island, located halfway up a tall hill, there is a small monastery occupied by several lamas and several dozen monks. In this video, two of the younger monks sing some basic Tibetan songs whose meaning is difficult for them to translate into Chinese. Qinghai Slideshow This is a collection of images from a trip to China's Qinghai Province in late April/early May 2007, set to the song "Cool Calm" by Kensuke Shiina & Irama Buyung. The trip covered Xining City, Qinghai Lake, Taer Monastery, Tongren Monastery, Xunhua City, Mengda Lake, Wendu Monastery, and Huzhu City. The man at 3:40 is not wearing a hat, rather, his hair is spun into a turban. Qinghai means "Turquoise Sea" in Chinese; even though this province is located very far from the coast, Qinghai lake is so massive that it resembles a sea horizon, and thus it justifies the moniker. Qinghai has traditionally been a part of ethnographic Tibet, but it also features other unique nationalities, such as the Sala muslims, descendants of Kazakh nomads who settled here 800 years ago, and the Tu people, who were once closely tied to northeastern Mongolian tribes, but have long since settled in the hills north of the Yellow River. Giant Prayer Wheel This is a giant prayer wheel located at the top of a hill beside a temple in the "old town" of Zhongdian city, or "Shangri-La." Tibetan buddhists believe that each time a prayer moves, it floats up into heaven. Therefore, in addition to moving prayers by whispering or chanting them, Tibetans also hang them up on prayer flags that send the prayer to heaven with each gust of wind, write them down and store them inside prayer wheels that they can spin in their hands, carve them onto prayer beads that they can run through their fingers, or, in this case, inscribe them on a tower-size prayer wheel that spins by the casual effort of two dozen monks, or the full strength of five. Chinese Wedding These clips are from a Valentine's Day wedding ceremony that took place in a village neighboring the city of Handan in Hebei province, China. The groom is an electronics repairman and the bride sells mobile phones. They both work in the city but they are from the countryside. The ceremony begins in the morning at the bride's home, where the groom and his uncle sit down with the bride's father and uncle and share a chat about the responsibilities of being a man of the house. The bride's sister then smears an oily paste on the groom's face called "yuan fen," which rhymes with a word meaning "fortune" and thus is meant to bring luck to the newlyweds. The groom then enters the bride's room, where he slips a pair of red gloves on her hands and red slippers on her feet before carrying her out into the courtyard and taking a family photo, with the bride's parents in the foreground. Everybody then meets at the groom's village for lunch, and then after the meal the groom's father hosts a "gift ceremony" where all the gifts are opened, counted, and attributed to the givers by name. This public spectacle provides an incentive to being generous and a serious disincentive to being miserly. Shigu Panorama The village of Shigu (stone drum) is located at the first bend of the Yangtze river as it flows down from the Himalayas and towards central China. This was the site of a famous battle between the ancient Tibetan kingdom and the Naxi kingdom. The Naxi defeated the Tibetans and held on to this territory. Their war ended when the two kingdoms signed a peace treaty and set a large stone drum in this village to commemorate the end of their war. Communist guerrillas camped here during their "Long March" in retreat from Chang Kai Shek's Nationalist army, and so it also boasts a cliff-top monument to the Communist Revolution.
