Costume Design 1 Here's a pretty simple method I sometimes use when designing outfits for characters. First I paint in the shape of the body using the paint brush to add and the eraser to subtract, on a layer above the background. Next I hit Preserve Transparency on that layer, and duplicate it. This next layer is for the shading of the skin. I make sure Preserve Transparency is on and then I fill the layer with white and then set the layer to Multiply. White becomes invisible when in Multiply mode so only the shadows will show up. I use a medium gray with a tint of blue for the shadow colour and then shade the skin at around 30% opacity. Next I make a layer for the clothing under the shadow layer but over the skin layer, by duplicating the skin layer and then setting it to preserve transparency. Then I used white to lay out where I wanted the clothing to go. Mind you, this really only works for skin tight clothing like lingerie. If I was going to make something that doesn't stick to the skin, I'd make a new layer above the shadow layer, paint in the shape of the clothing and then set it to preserve transparency so I could paint in shadows and highlights and folds and stuff. That's what I did for the hair and the belt thing that this girl's wearing. That's pretty much it... I hope someone finds this useful. Bad to Better - BETTER version! So, I had a few comments that my previous 'bad to better' videos weren't very helpful ( karry299, Orochimaru007 ), and they were absolutely right, so hopefully this one is an improvement. For people wondering, I drew both images before and after. The most confusing part in this would be when I was doing the red part for the neck and body. It's very hard to explain it in a video like this but my point was showing how the neck muscles connect to the jaw and back of head and middle of collar bones. The ends of rhe collar bones connect to the shoulder blades and deltoid etc... Speedpainting #10 A speedpainting in photoshop. I used one brush for pretty much the whole thing. At the end I changed the brush to a different one for a few spots in the background. For that part I showed my work area since a lot of people have asked what I'm doing. As you can see, there's nothing fancy. One layer, one brush. The thing I did at the very end though was to duplicate the layer, gaussian blur it, and change it to Soft Light. I find this creates a nice effect in portraits. Painting with Negative Space and Silhouettes Here's another technique. A great deal of people find it easier to see or find images in shapes rather than from lines. When drawing from line the mind often gets caught up in symbology, whereas when focusing on contour or silhouettes it does not. For this reason it's worthwhile to give this kind of painting a shot. Like in my video about organic shapes I had no idea where I was going when I started putting down marks. Incase anyone wants to know, I used the digital watercolour brush to paint with. Portrait Comparison - Male vs Female It seems like a lot of people are either better at drawing women and have trouble with men, or vice-versa. Usually females have an easier time drawing females and males have an easier time drawing males. So I wanted to do a side-by-side comparison of some of the differences when drawing males compared to females. I know that the presentation is a bit weird and awkward, but it's the best way I could think of to show the differences. I included a colouring portion to show some of the concerns that need to be taken into account when colouring also. I had no idea what to call this, hence the crappy title. Hope it helps some people. Speedsketch #6 This could've been a painting, but photoshop crashed and I hadn't saved in a while and couldn't be bothered so I'll call it a Speedsketch and move on. Speedpainting #9 Ugly one this time. There was a part in the middle that didn't record so that's why you see a jump, but all I did in the part that didn't show up was more of the same, then flip canvas and skew the image to fix some proportion mistakes. Drawing Bodies So I got a lot of requests from people to show how to draw the torso or the figure... Well... lol. I'm not very good with those! My specialty is faces... But anyway, I tried to show how I basically do figures. I usually am using paper and they look a bit better but hopefully the general idea comes through. I start with the spine and head and ribs and pelvis, then make the arms and legs and do it all very roughly. Then I make a body out of that. On paper I let it stay really rough and then I can trace over the good lines on a clean sheet. On computer it's easier by just using layers. I haven't had any formal training ( obviously ) so if you are good at figure drawing and could offer advice or tips, they'd be welcome. :) Tools: Painter IX Camtasia Studio Wacom Tablet Music: Ravel- Pavane for a Dead Princess Tags: drawing body bodies draw sketch |

How to Draw Necks I hope you can follow along with this without commentary. If not, it's okay cuz I'll tell you my secret. After a long time of struggling with drawing necks ( trying to learn from anatomy books and learn all the muscles ) I found that you really only need to know 3 main things- the trapezius, the clavicle and the sternocleidomastoid. You can look it up in an anatomy book if you don't know where they are. Once you do, you shouldn't have any problem seeing how I'm making necks. Advanced Perspective - Curvilinear This shows the idea of how to create a curvilinear perspective image. It's quite rough, and I wasn't interested in making a nice image. I wanted merely to show how to use curvilinear perspective. Normally this view would only be used when drawing something incredibly massive. It's a bit like looking through a fish-eye lens. It's considered an advanced technique because you should already have a good grasp of 1, 2 and 3 point before trying 5 point or curvilinear perspective. I cropped it at the end for better composition and to give that feeling of vertigo that curvilinear is great for.
