Catholic Mountain Chapel - July 2008 Reflection: In 1 Kings 3, we face the classic "genie in a bottle" scenario. What would we ask for? World peace? Greater faith? An understanding heart like Solomon? It's nice to think that such noble things would top our list, but that should make us wonder why aren't already working for them. We live in a country that affords us opportunities most of the world has never even dreamed of. And our Savior holds infinite graces. No genie can top that. So let's get to work. MountainView: Firm In Faith- John McCain "Stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong." 1 Corinthians 16:13 I have learned the truth: there are greater pursuits than self-seeking. Glory is not a conceit. It is not a decoration for valor. It is not a prize for being the most clever, the strongest, or the boldest. Glory belongs to the act of being constant to something greater than yourself, to a cause, to your principles, to the people on whom you rely, and who rely on you in return. No misfortune, no injury, no humiliation can destroy it. This is the faith that my commanders affirmed, that my brothers-in-arms encouraged my allegiance to. It was the faith I had un-knowingly embraced at the Naval Academy. It was my father's and grandfather's faith. A filthy, crippled, broken man, all I had left of my dignity was the faith of my fathers. It was enough. -John McCain Tags: john mccain Catholic Mountain men's faith bible jesus MountainView MountainCast |

MountainView: Sainthood Throughout history, there have been many heroes. And regardless of their story, each of them is recognized for having ultimately dedicated themselves to something important. Within the Catholic Church, we have our own group of heroes whom we acknowledge for their embodiment of Christian virtue. And still, for some reason, these saints sometimes seem distant, as if they are only figments of our imagination or stories to tell our children before First Communion. But these saints were real. They were real men and woman. Lawyers, nuns, soldiers, priests, teachers, young, and old. The saints, since their death even, have continued to be vessels of God's grace. And whatever their story was, whatever they are known for, we now are called not just to be like them, not just to honor them, not just to learn about them or pray to them. Indeed, we are called to join them. Tags: Sainthood saint Catholic Mountain men's faith bible jesus MountainView MountainCast |

MountainView: Saint Joseph The month of March brings an important day for all men of God: the feast of Saint Joseph. Here was a man who accepted the immeasurable responsibility of raising the Son of God to become a man of character, faith, and courage. From their arduous journey across the Egyptian desert to their time working together in the carpentry shop, the lives of Joseph and Jesus would form a connection that we often overlook. It was no secret, the prophets foretold a difficult death for Jesus and Joseph certainly feared for his son's future. Though unrelated by blood, the two would face similar trials and together theirs would soon became a story of humility, a story of submission, and a story of love. Though the experience rivals history's most exciting events, Joseph has spent the last two thousand years as a silent hero whom many regard as only a quiet, unimposing symbol of paternity. Clearly though, there was far more to this man. God chose a man of prayer, a man of wisdom, patience, purity, devotion, and strength. Today Joseph is the patron saint of workers, men, and a happy death, and his life should resonate deeply within the heart of every man who ever called himself a man of God. MountainVIew: Lions The lion has always held his title as king. His association with honor, nobility, strength, and courage has echoed through empires and civilizations for centuries. Royalty have born his image on their coats of arms, soldiers have carried him on their shields, and no one has ever questioned his role as leader. And it sounds funny, but there's a very profound line in Disney's Lion King. In his final breath, the great king says the one thing that even the simplest among us so often fail to say. "Brother, help me." Tags: Jesus Catholic Mountain men's group lions christ religion |

MountainView: Road Less Traveled "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." (Robert Frost) Every single Christian is called to a road. And there are only a couple things that we can know for sure. We don't walk alone, Christ promises us that. He also promises us that all of our roads, every one of them, will lead to a cross. In following Christ's example, we realize that He took the road less traveled. And that?... That made all the difference. Tags: Jesus Catholic Mountain men's group road less travelled christ religion |
