Hello Sailor - Blue Lady Hello Sailor was a New Zealand pop/rock band originally formed in 1975. The band's history is long and complicated, with guitarist/vocalists Dave McArtney and Harry Lyon having first played together in the mid 60s. After several lineup changes, the band released its first album Hello Sailor in 1977. The line-up at this time was Graham Brazier on vocals and some guitar, McArtney and Lyon on guitars and vocals, Lisle Kinney on bass, and Ricky Ball on drums. Hello Sailor built a huge following playing in hotels scattered throughout New Zealand, their first gig being in Tokoroa at the trees tavern. Three top 20 singles were taken from the album, Gutter Black written and sung by McArtney, Blue Lady written and sung by Brazier, and Lyin' in the sand written and sung by Lyon. It was the first record made in New Zealand that was certified gold. Their second album Pacifica Amour was released in 1978, after the band had made a first trip to America to try and crack the American market. The trip was not a success, in part due to a party atmosphere and the consumption of large amounts of drugs. In 1979 the band left for Australia, but this trip was again not a success. The band formally disbanded in 1980. During the following decades members of the band played and recorded both apart and together. The classic lineup was reformed for a concert in 1985, and an album Shipshape and Bristol Fashion was recorded that reworked older material. The band recorded another album The Album in 1994. The core members of the band continue working together and apart to this day. Gutter Black is the title music for the 2005/2006 television series Outrageous Fortune. Line-Up: Graham Brazier (Saxophone / Vocals) Dave McArtney (Guitar / Vocals) Harry Lyon (Lead Guitar) Graeme Turner (Drums) Lisle Kinney (Bass Guitar) http://www.hellosailor.co.nz/HTML2/Disco2.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello_Sailor_(band) Tags: NZ Kiwi New Zealand Music Hello Sailor Blue Lady |

Anika Moa - Youthful Anika Moa started her career when she was just 13, when she began writing songs. She writes all her songs and amongst other instruments is more than handy on the guitar. She was born in Auckland and raised in Christchurch. She is the first New Zealand artist to be signed to a major US label without having released an album. After hearing demos, Warner NZ rang her up and said "let's go to New York". When Atlantic Records heard her they instantly signed her up. As a result she is now signed to Warner New Zealand and Atlantic Records in the USA. Anika Moa is a singer/songwriter who needs little introduction. She burst onto the New Zealand music scene 3 years ago with the double-platinum album 'Thinking Room'. Singles such as 'Youthful', 'Good In My Head', and 'Falling In Love Again' became massive hits and led the charge in the renaissance of local music on commercial radio. A plethora of touring followed in the wake of this success. Aside from Anika's obvious songwriting skills, her talents are nowhere more apparent than when playing live. Anika is a true raconteur — not just holding audiences spellbound with her songs, but keeping them entertained with her witty, often hilarious, between song banter and stories. She has the down-to-earth kiwi humour that wins audiences over in an instant and keeps them returning for more. Anika is currently working on material for her new album which she describes as being "more raw and earthy" than it's predecessor. Displaying her maturity as a songwriter, Anika has opted to write about weightier topics than the standard singer/songwriter ruminations on love and life. In her new works she explores the notion of Aotearoa's nationhood, and in particular the recurrent themes of her own Maori heritage — the legacy of culture, land and tangata whenua. Where was Maoridom then, where is it now and where is it going? So few songwriters dare to challenge themselves and audiences anymore in the sanitised and 'play-it-safe' culture of the modern global music industry. In Anika Moa, New Zealand can lay claim to a true artist using her voice intelligently and thoughtfully. She has collaborated with The Feelers lead singer/songwriter James Reid on a number of songs and they appear on her debut album. Anika's debut single was 'Youthful' and her debut album released in 2001 is called 'Thinking Room'. Winner of Top Female Vocalist and Songwriter of the Year in the 2002 NZ Music Awards! http://www.muzic.net.nz/artists/192.html http://www.anikamoa.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anika_Moa http://www.nzgirl.co.nz/articles/5244 Tags: NZ Kiwi New Zealand Music Anika Moa Youthful |

Sharon O'Neil - Danced In The Fire Sharon O'Neill (born 23 November 1952 in Nelson, New Zealand) is a singer-songwriter and pianist from New Zealand, best known for her 1983 hit single "Maxine". O'Neill began her career in the 1970s in her home country, then gained major success in Australia with the hit "Words" and the subsequent singles "How Do You Talk to Boys?", "Losing You", and "Maybe". The early 1980s proved her most commercially successful period, with the Foreign Affairs album in 1983 spawning her biggest hit "Maxine". A legal battle with her then record company Sony Music caused a delay in her career. During the enforced hiatus, O'Neill wrote songs for ABC TV series Sweet and Sour (1984) including the title song performed by Deborah Conway (later recorded by O'Neill as In Control)[1] and Glam to Wham[1]. In 1988 Sharon returned with arguably her best album (if under-rated at the time) Danced in the Fire on Polygram Records which featured some biographical songs about the legal wrangles with Sony. O'Neill's last album of new material, Edge of Winter, was released in 1990. A mature work, two singles were taken from this album, "Satin Sheets" and "Poster Girl", both of which failed to find chart success. She all but disappeared from the music scene until 2001 when she toured as a guest artist with New Zealand female act, When the Cat's Away. In 2005 she toured Australia as a support act for Leo Sayer and for the first time a comprehensive collection of her greatest hits was released on CD. In 2006 O'Neill again toured Australia supporting Leo Sayer. In 2007 Sharon will tour as part of the 'Count Down Spectacular 2' shows Australia-wide. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharon_O'Neill (more) Tags: NZ Kiwi New Zealand Music Sharon O'Neil Danced In The Fire |
