Homegrown Revolution Trailer: Premiers Wild & Scenic Film Festival Jan 9-11 Homegrown Revolution (2008) is a film short that gives a brief introduction to the Dervaes Family's urban homestead which they call "Path to Freedom." On this tiny city lot, a beautiful and productive oasis was created, producing 6,000 lbs of food annually and is a model of urban sustainability. Film premiers at the WILD & SCENIC FILM FESTIVAL (Jan 9-11, 2009) http://www.wildandscenicfilmfestival.org ------About Path to Freedom------ Since the mid 1980s, members of the Dervaes family have steadily worked at transforming their ordinary city lot in Pasadena into a thriving organic micro farm that supplies them with food all year round. These eco-pioneers also run a successful home business providing their surplus produce to local restaurants. Through their adventures in growing and preserving their own food, installing a solar power system, home-brewing biodiesel for fuel, raising backyard farm animals, and learning back-to-basics skills, these modern-day pioneers have revived the old-fashioned spirit of self-reliance and resourcefulness. Since 2001, their website has inspired hundreds of thousands to take steps towards a sustainable future and has generated a 21st century urban homestead movement. visit their blog at http://www.urbanhomestead.org/journal Tags: homegrown revolution dervaes urban homestead homesteading farming growing your own food |

HomeGrown Film St Louis Nov 16 HomeGrown (2008) HomeGrown is the inspiring true story of a family living off the grid in the heart of urban Pasadena, California. They harvest over 6,000 pounds of produce on less than a quarter of an acre, while running a popular website that is known around the world. The film is an intimate human portrait of what its like to live like Little House on the Prairie in the 21st Century. By dawn, the interchange of the 134 Freeway and Interstate 210 is already starting to thrum with traffic. But only a hundred feet away, the Dervaes family has been up for hours. Their surprisingly tiny green oasis is a working farm right in the middle of Pasadena. Once seen as a nutty idea, the family homestead now produces three tons of organic produce a year. Jules and his adult children, Justin, Anaïs and Jordanne speak candidly about what shaped their family and their need for independence. We learn about Jules father, an oil executive with a green thumb, Jules adventures as a young man homesteading in New Zealand, and the sorrows and hardships their family has faced over the years, including divorce, lawsuits and a stint foraging for recyclable cans. We watch them wrestle with their quest to live a simple lifestyle even as their website, Path To Freedom, demands more attention from followers around the world. Originally set up to share farming tips, it now dangles tantalizing prospects of a financial windfall. But what would it mean to sell ad space on their website instead of getting their hands dirty? Would it change their way of life if they got used to easy money? And how will Jules children be able to buy their own homesteads and carry on in the future? There are no easy answers. But along the way, the Dervaes have grown stronger and found a tight knit community based on family, friends, good food, hard work, and the commitment to tread lightly upon the earth. --------------------------------- Please note this is an indepedently made documentary Visit the film's website (www.homegrown-film.com) Contact the director, Robert McFalls for screening and distribution details View the trailer on YOUTUBE at http://www.youtube.com/user/homegrownfilm Tags: homegrown st louis robert mcfalls film festival |

The Urban Homestead California Heartland (PBS) Jules Dervaes and his three adult children all live and work together on their family farm in Pasadena, CA. They call themselves, eco-pioneers. They say its a homegrown revolution that's taking place, a way for them to get back to a more natural, organic and better way of life. Their mission? To change the world one urban backyard at a time. California Heartlands Jennifer Quinonez visits the Dervaes home where at the helm is Jules, a man whose vision wasn't so clear 23 years ago when he bought the 1917 California bungalow for his family. All he knew was that the cost of keeping of a green, but barely usable front yard, was a waste of money and resources. He began taking action and made a shift in the way he lives in an urban city. By clearing out the grass and planting an edible garden, the change began. In 1991, Jules discovered a way to profit from his garden. Area teahouses were in need for his edible flowers, and that's when he realized he could make money out of his hobby. But biggest change in his life happened in 2001. When buying organic food became too expensive and difficult to find, and genetically altered food started hitting the market, Jules took matters into his own hands and began Path to Freedom. At this little urban homestead in the big city, the family produces 6,000 pounds of organic produce a year. Its amazing that their home is on a 1/5 acre and their garden is only on 1/10 acre! The front yard is 95% edible and the rest of the main planters are in the backyard. Every corner is used to grow food. Jules says he doesn't need more space; he just needs to be a smarter gardener. He looks to the Japanese and Europeans for guidance, those who for thousands of years have had to grow food in a small space. In his garden, or micro-farm as he prefers, you'll find more than 350 different vegetables, herbs, fruits, and berries. In addition to planning crops, the family is truly living an eco friendly lifestyle. They are proud that their energy usage is only 6.5 kilowatt hours a day, and continues to decrease. They make their own biodiesel for their one truck and they also have an outdoor shower for summertime use. This is now a full-time job for Jules and his three children, who sell their produce to area restaurants. They've also expanded into education outreach, started an online store to sell garden & eco-friendly materials and are making it their goal to get people to change their attitude about food. They say, Food is power, the more we grow ourselves, the better. In the Garden (KCBS & KCAL 2006) KCBS anchor Ann Martin visits the Dervaes family amazing edible estate. Living off the land doesn't mean moving to the country. The Dervaes family has taken it upon themselves to grow as much of their diet right on a typical urban lot. Over a decade ago, the family smothered their traditional lawn and transformed their city lot into an amazingly productive edible estate. The family's 1/10 acre garden provides them with all the vegetables, herbs and fruit needed for their vegetarian diet, as well as a viable income. In the summer, their "100 foot diet" consists of nearly 80%-90% of homegrown produce. Even though their garden may be small, it's hugely productive, yielding over 3 tons (6,000 lbs) of food. Organic Food (Yahoo Answers 2007) Notes by host J. Keith van Straaten *On the streets, we talked to dozens of people from all over the world. I don't think we found a single person who said organic food wasn't a better way to go. *The very crafty Jules Dervaes runs the Path To Freedom Urban Homestead with his family. They've created a genuine farm on their plain ol' city lot in Pasadena. They were gracious hosts to us for our shoot. And they didn't give us a hard time for misspelling their family name in the video. *Christine Bybee is indeed a certified nutritionist --and a nutritionist to the stars! The Rutgers University study she cites is actually still a topic of debate in the nutrition community. Judge for yourself. *Anna Getty has already judged and is definitely pro-organic! She's a spokesperson for The Organic Center and understandably I felt a little uncomfortable taking a Big Bite of hot dog in front of her. No worries; I more than made up for it a few weeks later. *The lady serving me my pizza and salad is Mani, our fabulous PA. I call her Libbie as a way of saying hi to my grandmother. What got cut... The salad Mani/Libbie put down was put together by the Dervaes family. It was made entirely from their farm, was 100% organic, and was topped by edible flowers. Yum! Still, the original ending had me getting into a tug-of-war over the non-organic pizza with our cameraman! (He won.) For more info on who I am and what I'm up to, check out my Yahoo! 360 page or my personal site. And who knows, maybe next time we're out talking to people on the street, we'll run into YOU!
