European Journal | Turkey: Roma district threatened with demolition Istanbulâs old Roma district, Sulukule, is to be torn down. Many politicians want to have done with the dilapidated wooden buildings in the shadow of the ancient Byzantine wall. They have offered the residents compensation and want to resettle them outside the city in new estates. Few people realize that the Roma were here on the Bosporus long before the Turks were. Pulling down Sulukule would not only be razing a historical district, but would also rob the Roma of their social cohesion. Many Turkish artists and intellectuals are backing the struggle against demolition. Tags: Deutsche Welle DW-TV European Journal Europe |

Testing has so far been limited to simulations. But the first "Velaro RUS" train is now ready for shipment to Russia via the Baltic Sea. Our reporters Alexa Meyer and Alexandra von Nahmen are on board for its maiden voyage. Tags: Deutsche Welle DW-TV Made in Germany Business |

GLOBAL 3000 | Fighting Famine - Young Global Leaders Every year the World Economic Forum nominates up to 300 outstanding personalities from business, politics, research and culture as Young Global Leaders. All of them are involved in working together for a better world. Global 3000 has interviewed 11 of the innovative thinkers and movers. As well as climate change, they are concerned with topics such as poverty, energy, the global food crisis and leadership styles. The global food crisis is one of the biggest challenges of all time, according to Leslie Maasdorp, financial expert for the British company Barclays Capital in South Africa. He says the growing demand is one of the core reasons for hunger in many countries. As it is not possible to change this trend, he believes the supply should be increased. Massdorp is calling for all countries to work together to achieve sustainable increases in production. Christophe Beck spent 10 years working for the food company Nestlé before moving to Ecolab in the United States. He says the food crisis is a negative effect triggered by what is, in effect, a positive outcome of globalization. After all, it is a good thing that increasing numbers of people can afford to buy more to eat. Tags: Deutsche Welle DW-TV GLOBAL 3000 Globalization |

GLOBAL 3000 | Angkor Wat â Endangered World Heritage Site Under Restoration Angkor Wat in Cambodia was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992. The temple complex, which is believed to have been built in the 12th century during the reign of King Suryavarman II, is reputed to be the biggest religious edifice in the world and a unique manifestation of Khmer culture. For decades, the buildings were completely neglected and the climate, vegetation and mankind, in the shape of plunderers, took their toll. But the million or so tourists who visit the complex every year have also left their mark. For several years now, international organizations and scientists have been working to preserve the building, but up to now, there hasn't been a Cambodian team involved. The German development service want to change that with their training program project. Tags: Deutsche Welle DW-TV GLOBAL 3000 Globalization |
