Lance Neve in Rochester, NY A grand jury has indicted a local man for a hate crime five months after a brutal attack. Lance Neve says it's a victory for the gay community and proves the Rochester community will not tolerate hate crimes. Neve spent several days in Strong Hospital with a fractured skull, nose, upper jaw and eye socket after an attack. This Thursday, Jesse Parsons of Spencerport will be arraigned in Monroe County court. He's charged with second-degree assault designated as a hate crime. "I had a fractured skull with blood on my brain." By just looking at Lance Neve, you might not know he was nearly beaten to death. "I have bad dreams about it still today. I was punched and I went to the floor. He continued to beat my head into the floor." It's been five months but this week the suspect will be charged with a hate crime. Neve said, "Everyday I'll remember his name." The name of Jesse Parsons. Police say parsons yelled gay slurs at Neve this past March at Snuggery's bar in Spencerport. Neve tried to leave. Police say that's when Parsons came up from behind him, knocking him unconscious. Neve's partner, Ozzie Maldonado, was there. "I don't understand why he did what he did and I don't think I ever will understand." The only visible scars left are around Neve's eye but the emotional scars run deep. "I don't like it when people are behind me. I even jump when my loved one comes up to rub my shoulders, I jump." But the brutal beating has brought these two closer together. "We're going to stand strong." http://www.whec.com/article/stories/S556593.shtml?cat=566 Tags: hate crime gay Lance Neve Rochester NY New York |

Daniel Wilson in Burlington, VT A young man was assaulted in downtown Burlington early Wednesday morning, and he says it happened because he is gay. Daniel Wilson says he was hanging out in the Half Lounge on Church Street at around 2 a.m. when another young man flicked his wrist in an effeminate manner, apparently making fun of Wilson for being gay. When Wilson stepped outside for a cigarette he says he asked the man why he was making fun of him. "I wasn't trying to instigate nobody, wasn't trying to fight nobody, and I asked him like why would you do that?" says Wilson of the incident. "All of a sudden he hit me in the chest full force, he boxed his shoulders up and hits me, and I said 'Why are you hitting me?' and that's all I remember." The man then allegedly punched Wilson in the face. His lip and chin were busted open and required 17 stitches. His clothes are stained with blood. http://www.wcax.com/Global/story.asp?S=8875859 Tags: hate crime gay daniel wilson burlington vt vermont |

Robert Stotler in Tulsa, OK Lawmakers and community leaders come together to demand a change in Oklahoma's Hate Crime law. Activists and lawmakers are calling for protection of gays under the Hate Crime Statute but not all lawmakers. Fox 23 News was the first to report what someone did to a gay couple's home in July. Fox 23's Abbie Alford uncovered this crime revealing sexual orientation is not part of Oklahoma's Hate Crime law, which led to Tuesday's forum. A month after vandals spray painted Robert Stotler and his partner's home "Gay Must Go" Robert says they still live in fear. "In my heart I believe it's a terrible, terrible violation of my rights," says Stotler. As an openly gay person Robert says he shouldn't be targeted because of his sexual orientation. http://www.fox23.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=c4be049f-d4da-416c-81dd-6256c5e62c49 Tags: hate crime gay robert stotler tulsa ok |

Jimmy Dean in Dallas, TX CBS 11 News talked with the Dallas man who police say was the target of a vicious hate crime. He was an aspiring guitarist who looked much younger than his 42-years, but that was before the morning of July 17. Jimmy Dean still plays the guitar but he is scarred for life. "I'm doing better, aside from not having much of a face left," he explained. "[I] don't look as good as I used to." Dean was beaten and robbed not far from his apartment off Throckmorton and Cedar Springs, near the city's gay bars and clubs. Police say Jonathan Gunter and Bobby Singleton yelled gay slurs before they were arrested by nearby security guards. The victim remembers almost nothing about the attack. "I remember about the first hit and that was it. There's a couple of things I heard as I was going down." Those things he heard were gay slurs according to witnesses. Dallas police classified the case as a hate crime, but the district attorney's office decided to prosecute it as an aggravated robbery charge. The difference for Dean is pretty clear. "Either way how you slice it's hate. I think they did target me," he said. Dean's jaw and cheek bones were crushed from kicks to the head by two men he says he feels sorry for. http://cbs11tv.com/local/Jimmy.Dean.Jonathan.2.787754.html Tags: hate crime gay jimmy dean dallas tx texas |

Angie Zapata in Greeley, CO A Greeley transgender woman was apparently murdered this month because a man she met on the Internet became angry when he discovered she was biologically male. The Weld District Attorney charged Allen Ray Andrade, 32, of Thornton with second-degree murder and aggravated motor vehicle theft Wednesday after Thornton police arrested him on traffic warrants and Greeley police arrested him thereafter on the murder charge. He was picked up while he was in the dead woman's car. The news came as an incredible relief for Angie Zapata's sister, Monica Zapata. "I thought they were never going to find him, honestly, I was doubting the police. I was doubting everybody. I just thought he was going to be out there forever," Monica Zapata said in an interview with Fox 31. "But when they called me and they told me I was the first one they called, it lifted away from me — that knot from your throat, like it was not there anymore." An arrest affidavits shows Andrade told officers he met Angie Zapata on the Internet and they got together in Greeley. When he discovered Zapata was biologically male, he beat her to death with a fire extinguisher. Unknown victim in Springville, NY SPRINGVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) - Sheriff's Deputies say an attack near a Springville bar is a hate crime. They've arrested a suspect. Erie County Sheriff's Deputies say the assault suspect couldn't hide from a private surveillance camera. Not only did the camera capture the assault, but it also captured a clear image of suspect, which helped deputies recognize him, and take him into custody. It was two o'clock Friday morning when violence erupted on a Springville street. We're told a man in the white T-shirt and dark colored hat followed another man out of the Casey's Bar on East Main Street and they crossed the road. Creech speaks of trying to end what he calls religion-based bigotry. This past week, the Faith in America group ended its campaign in South Carolina with a town hall debate in Greenville between Christian evangelicals and the campaign's organizers. Police said the vandals spray painted the words "gay" and "fag" on homes and vehicles with black paint. Three houses in total were vandalized with the slurs on the 2800 block of Northwest 7th Avenue. Residents were shocked by the incident. John Heseltine, a resident, spent the day cleaning up the spray-paint on his house, door and car. Ashville, NC A recent attack on a downtown Asheville street has some members of the gay, lesbian, bi and transgender community concerned about safety. Police say a man was walking alone to a gay bar on Haywood Street when two other men robbed him. The victim was able to fight them off with a knife, but the police report says the attackers used a gay slur at the end of the incident, keeping it from being classified as a hate-motivated crime. As a result of the attack, some concerned residents have formed the Safe Streets Asheville Project to appeal for better security for the GLBT community. Chief Hogan with the Asheville police department says he's ready to work with organizers, and says if there is any indication of a hate crime, that will be pursued. North Carolina hate crimes law does not include sexual orientation. No one has been arrested in the Haywood Street incident, but police believe the men involved may be responsible for other robberies, as well. http://www.wlos.com/shared/newsroom/top_stories/wlos_vid_991.shtml Tags: hate crime ashville north carolina nc gay |

Brian Carter in Greeley, CO A Greeley police sergeant has been pulled off the job while police investigate his alleged role in a huge bar brawl over the weekend. The officer's son, Dan Hulsey, is accused of hitting bar patron Brian Carter in the face with a beer glass during a fight that involved an estimated 150 people. Sheriff's deputies arrested Dan Hulsey for assault and now they're investigating Hulsey's father, Kell Hulsey, who is a Greeley police sergeant. No charges have been filed against the officer at this point. "He thought (Carter) was looking at him wrong," said Dave Duty, owner of the Pot Belly Deli and Bar. Duty said Dan Hulsey thought Carter was gay and looking at him, so he used the glass. Witness Eric Haenschen said he ran to try to break up the fight on the deck of the bar. Rodney Whitaker in Memphis, TN, Part 2 Memphis, TN - Tears well up in Claudia Blair's eyes when she thinks about her 20 year-old cousin, Rodney Whitaker, as a child. "I used to change his diapers," she says. "He was a good child. How all this ended up...abandoned building, clothes everywhere, condoms...he didn't have to die like that. He didn't." Claudia and her 19 year-old daughter Porshia, say whoever killed Rodney, killed a young man with a heart of gold. A young man, they say, whose family always suspected he was gay. "Yeah, because we would do cheerleading moves together," says Porshia. "And once when I went over there, Bring It On had just come out and he knew the moves better than the girls in the movie. So I knew he would be different." Porshia and her mom did not know until after Rodney was found shot to death behind a Southeast Memphis daycare on Tuesday, July 1, 2008, in a parking lot littered with used condoms, that he'd been turning tricks for money since he was 16. They also didn't know he was a transgender. http://www.myeyewitnessnews.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=fa1a880a-fc1e-4eb1-ad97-2db13635ce4d Tags: hate crime Rodney Whitaker Memphis Tennessee TN |
