Michael Jordan 1993 Playoffs: 39pts, Gm 3 Vs. Atlanta Hawks Itching to 3-peat, MJ wrapped up the first round sweep of the Atlanta Hawks in typical, dominant fashion. Dominique Wilkins, as awesome as he was, simply was no match for the complete game of MJ's. Yes, you had your beautiful jumpers, cunning drives and smart defensive plays all in this game as usual but the story of the game was MJ's ankle sprain which looked as bad as his 2nd year broken foot injury. I thought to myself, either this is the end or if he somehow comes back, he'll switch to another gear to compensate and score 40+ points. Well, he went down with 25 points and after he came back, he poured in 14 more on one foot to hit for 39. So I was off by 1 point which wasn't too shabby. Michael Jordan 1993 Playoffs: 35pts, Gm1 Vs. Atlanta Hawks The 1993 Bulls 'coasted' during the regular season just enough to secure home court. And after that, it was all business. MJ said he wanted to just skip the regular season altogether just to get to this first playoff game. Meeting Dominique's Hawks here, MJ again raised his adrenaline for the real season; notching 18 first quarter points and 35 overall on 58% shooting through just a bit over 3 quarters of play for the secure victory. Along the way, he dropped speedy pop-and-stops, a forward fading 3 and a handful of smartly-screened jumpers as if they were on yo-yo strings. Oh yeah, and he showed off his oven-mitt-sized hands a few times for the memory book. As Stephon Marbury once said after playing against MJ, "How can one person have so much game?" Michael Jordan 2002: 35pts at age 38 Vs. KG's 'Wolves What more can be said? Yoda Mike here basically abused All-First-D-prime-KG like he wasn't even there. 5-7 possessions in a row with KG trying to guard him, MJ just ran around him, through him, mind-faked him and shot over him as if it was KG who was about to turn 40 years old. With 26 pts on 59% in the first half on KG and the 1st place Wolves, MJ showed that once again, the elite 'bigs' raised his game even at a grandfatherly stage. Too bad for us fans in the 2nd half, the Wolves gave up on KG and stuck Wally on MJ which perhaps made him tone down his aggro zone and may have kept him from reaching 40 points. Luckily for the Timberwolves, Billups could not miss from anywhere and his long range blitz was just too much at the end. But the embarrassment was already done on the individual end by MJ in the first half which overshadowed everything in its path. (Edit: MJ had 4 assists here, not 6 which is a typo.) Michael Jordan 1987: 44pts Vs. Akeem's Rockets The Houston Rockets always gave MJ's Bulls a tough time in the regular season. With the greatest finesse center ever (and perhaps the greatest center period) in Olajuwon patrolling the paint, MJ's competitive juices rose to the nth level. Olajuwon and Rodney McCray together played hard and tough with sticky defense, lane clogging and body blows whenever MJ took it inside. However, MJ's pure athleticism was no match in these years as his individual creativity knew no bounds. MJ assaulted the Rockets with smart jumpers using screens, double-team run arounds to get quick shots and whatever improvised forays to the basket his hands and hang time would bring. It took a miracle shot at halftime by The Dream and a miracle tip-in at the last second for the Rockets to eke this one out against MJ's athletic masterpiece. MJ's show was brilliant and the Houston fans went home happy. We all win with MJ it seems. Michael Jordan 2003: 35pts at age 40 Vs. Yao's Rockets In the game prior to this against Indiana, MJ would suffer a severely bruised thigh which nearly put him on the injured list. However, with the playoffs still in sight, there was no such thing as injuries of course. I believe a teammate looked at the swelling in MJ's leg in shock and said, "You're going to play with THAT!?" To which MJ said, "Yes". And on it was against Yao's Rockets with the incredible, recent, ring-winner Posey getting the bulk of the 40-year-old-injured MJ for a 58% shooting night. Noticeably sliding on one leg, MJ's touch brought him into the zone while abusing the young Posey with his brains and will. But Houston clawed back to tie the game with an incredible run in the 4th where MJ would have to perform his miracle again. This time, his shot was a hair long so on it went to OT. Now, I was sure MJ's dead leg would render him a decoy in OT but as I should have known, an injured MJ is always a deadlier MJ since his will knows no boundaries. Going 5-5 in the last 3 minutes of OT to score all 10 points with several gorgeous fades, MJ incredibly managed to completely take over and dominate the game yet again for the nail in the coffin. It was absolutely stunning. (For the record, MJ would go 3-5 in game-winners as a Wizard with this game being one of his rare misses.) Michael Jordan 1987: 53pts Vs. Clyde's Portland Trailblazers In the 80s, MJ was Air Jordan and this game was your typical showcase of his unique and unparalleled athleticism during his 37.1ppg year. With his supposed nemesis Clyde Drexler in town, MJ raised it up just a tad and basically took on the entire team by himself, bringing them back throughout the whole game for the win in the final minutes. With drive after drive, MJ was firing on all cylinders while earning his charity shots the hard way. Not one three point attempt was even taken here to break 50. Even more dominant perhaps in addition to his 20 buckets on 59% shooting was his defense. Covering the entire floor at all times, MJ was seemingly everywhere. Look at MJ going insane after having his block called a foul in the end with the game already in the bag with seconds left. That is the reaction of someone seeking supreme dominance. As Barkley said, MJ doesn't just want to beat you, he wants to win every play and dominate you so you'll never think the same way again. You can see MJ just looking to kill people on the drive whenever he had the ball and you never knew what shot or pass might be created in that moment. Thus was the joy of watching the master of improvisation in his athletic prime. hoopsencyclopedia.blogspot.com Tags: Michael Jordan Drexler Bulls Blazers MJ Lakers Finals Celtics Heat Magic Lebron Kobe Wade Mayo Rose Garnett Yao Iverson Tmac Mcgrady NBA Clyde Bird Shaq Carter AI Pierce Allen Vince |

Michael Jordan 1993: 44pts Vs. Phoenix Suns What a sneak preview of that year's Finals. With the Bulls meeting the top-winning team that year in the Suns, we all knew MJ would raise his game and enter his zone - which he obviously did. MJ mixed in his regular amazing shots with some rarities you'll ever see anyone do ever and today: a half-court, lefty-drive dunk, a fast-break stop/pop jumper and a ridiculous, finger-roll. Hitting 61%, MJ made disgusting shot after shot to bring the Bulls down from 11 to tie it up with seconds left in the game. Fortunately for the Suns, super PG Kevin Johnson came through with some amazing, slithering drives and Barkley punctuated the end with his own clutch, power shots in the waning seconds. But MJ's masterful performance was just a harbinger of what was to come later in the finals that year, which we all know of course. Michael Jordan 2002: 41pts at age 38 Vs. Phoenix Suns When MJ said his injured knee was feeling 'not horrible' during this grandfatherly phase (which was not often), he was dropping 40+ with ease. Here he is getting 41 just after hitting 40 against Cleveland at age 38 and a half. I assume that Dan Majerle brought out the inspiration in Father MJ due to memories of the 1993 Finals and unfortunately, The Young Matrix got in the way and took some abuse in the process. Hitting the zone and 17 shots, MJ notched 41pts on 17 buckets at 57% without even taking a trey and only needing 7 free throws. This was MJ's zone alone and even at this age, MJ's will, creativity and ability to improvise and stack the highlight reel were miles above the young'uns. Michael Jordan 1991 Finals: Gm 5 Vs. LA Lakers, 30pts. MJ sealed his first ring with yet another brilliant performance. While this version of MJ could have taken over an entire series with his athleticism alone, he put a lid on his individual superiority perhaps because he was too busy out-Magic-ing Magic's all-around game. MJ balanced his own dominance with a superb, team game that was reflected in his near triple-double numbers for the series. With beautiful drives, a faaadeaway at the end (this is what a true fadeaway is, not the turn-around shots that are mistakenly called fades today) and the mustard shot (although it did not count), MJ completed his last step to the top of the mountain from where he would remain forever. Michael Jordan 1991 Finals: Gm 4 Vs. LA Lakers, 28pts. MJ entered this game with a severely bruised toe which he suffered at the end of Game 3 on a miraculous clutch shot over Vlade Divac. Limited in overall mobility, one would have thought MJ would take more jumpers or resort to taking 10+ three pointers like most perimeters today. But of course not. MJ picked his spots and opponents and attacked the rim as usual with gorgeous, spectacular moves to the hole for maximum efficiciency and psychological damage to the other team. Shooting 11-20 and dishing 13 assists, it was a supreme performance on the greatest stage. In addition, he and Scottie switched on Magic throughout the game. With an intense LA crowd, MJ was in steely control with crisp passes to teammates, calm aggressiveness and confident poise. And as Marv caps it perfectly at the end, it's a good thing LA didn't see a healthy MJ that night. (The rest of this series is uploaded in succession except Game 2 which was uploaded last year. Michael Jordan 1991 Finals: Gm 3 Vs. LA Lakers, 29pts. After a rare, clutch miss in Game 1, MJ would redeem himself here to bring Game 3 into OT. The stunning shot over Divac's outstretched arms dropped even with MJ unable to follow through due to Divac's length. But it was MJ's clutch defense that truly saved the win - coming up with the crucial strip to prevent LA from taking a clean, game-winner to make sure OT would happen. As usual, making these types of clutch shots and defensive plays in these moments were the norm for MJ so it came as no surprise. And although this game would become the poorest shooting game of the series for MJ at just 11-28, the shots that mattered most in the end all hit nothing but net. Battling tendinitis in his legs, a Laker team at home ready to protect the fort and a twisted knee from the Pistons series, MJ still took it to the hole in the clutch to live up to his flair for the spectacular. Michael Jordan 1991 Finals: Gm 1 Vs. LA Lakers, 36pts MJ's very first Finals game started off with a bang. With the Magic Vs. Michael theme being the dream storyline the world wanted, all eyes were on MJ to see if he could knock out the Champ to be the Champ. Game 1 was an almost perfect performance from The Master as he dominated on both ends of the floor -- scoring his customary and efficient 36 on 14-24 shooting while simultaneously guarding Magic the majority of the time. Although Magic's greatness squeaked him a triple double with 19pts, 10 rebs and 11 asts, MJ's maniacal perimeter-post defense allowed him only 5 shots the entire game. The Bulls however played with nervous energy and the experienced Lakers team kept a close lead throughout the game. MJ switched on his heroics with the use of the 'now dead' stop-and-pop jumper and a supreme, leftward-perimeter-post-fade to eke out a lead in the crucial moments. But, an amazing three pointer by Perkins meant MJ had to do it again. MJ's game-tying attempt was a beautiful shake to offer a clean jumper but to everyone's disbelief, the ball went in and out. And although it was a rare miss by the game's greatest ever clutch player, I remember my close friend from school saying the next day, "That last shot - even his misses are amazing." No need to argue that. Kudos to Scottie's amazing shot at the buzzer as well. (The rest of this series is uploaded in succession except Game 2 which was uploaded last year. Michael Jordan 1997: 2nd Game Vs. Shaq/Kobe Lakers, 27pts This 2nd meeting between MJ and Shaq's Lakers somewhat lost its luster due to Shaq being grounded from an injury. With the Bulls playing their 3rd road game in 4 nights, no one but MJ and Pip bothered to show up. MJ's crystal ball "words of wisdom" before the game should have been heeded but the energy just wasn't there. MJ, however, was his usual self with his intensity and defense - even though at 10-24, his shot took a rare night off by his standards - especially with him shooting a torrid 58.4% in his last 8 games leading up to this one. But the main development was that Elden Campbell did his best Shaq impersonation and allowed the feisty Lakers to control the game this night. On a side note, it was pure entertainment watching a young Kobe Bryant displaying his zest in playing against his idol for the 2nd time in his career (the 1st game is also uploaded on my channel). And while the game was not the grand show it was supposed to be with Shaq out of the picture, MJ's footwork and cool fades were as satisfying as ever. And, of course, the customary 'move of the night' belonged to its rightful owner. Michael Jordan 1997: First Game Vs. Shaq/Kobe Lakers, 30pts If I remember correctly, I believe MJ had one of his all-night-golf outings before this game which was one reason why his shot might have eluded him this night. This game was interesting in that MJ was meeting Shaq in LA for the first time. On a side note, the appetizer was a very young and skinny Kobe Bryant who was given 10 minutes in his first ever game against his idol. And as MJ greeted a rookie Shaq in Orlando in their first meeting with a block, MJ welcomed the future star to a modest dunk in their very first matchup (the 2nd meeting is also uploaded on my channel). But the story of the game was the game. The Bulls were taken aback by an amazing night from Van Exel and Shaq and fell behind by 22 at the half. MJ's shot was only visible at the end of the half which was probably why the Bulls didn't drop by 30. In the 2nd half, MJ became what he would call "The Utility Man". He plugged all the holes and did the dirty work - hustling on defense, setting screens, passing to the hot man etc. Down 18 points in the 4th, Kukoc and Pip stepped up and stood besides MJ's leadership and brought the game to OT. And while MJ's shot was still MIA, he drilled the nail-in-coffin free throws to seal the game. This was one of the most amazing comebacks ever and one reason why the Bulls were the Bulls. Michael Jordan 1996: 46pts Vs. Washington Bullets There really seemed to be no reason for MJ to come out against the mediocre Bullets with this sort of tenacity. But watching the game closely, it seemed MJ purposely set up his jumpers in order to open up his drives to challenge the 7-7 Muresan for a dunk. Big Men were just the main course during MJ's reign and Muresan just came along a little to late for his own good. There was no doubt that MJ made several attacks with Muresan on his mind but the collapsing Washington defense averted a few embarrassing moments for the Big Guy. But, nevertheless, with 46pts on 52% shooting and the cool victory, MJ still had plenty to be happy with. This performance was sandwiched inside an 11-game span where MJ averaged 55.1% with a low of 50% and a high of 64.3% while scoring 27-48 points per game for a 36.2ppg average. But then again, considering a career that spanned 1072 games at 50% and 30.1ppg, that's just a normal drop in the bucket. Michael Jordan 1998: 44pts Vs. NY, Last Regular Game as Bull MJ's last regular season game ever as a Bull was yet another 40+pt performance without breaking a sweat. Although MJ came out with perhaps a bit too much energy on 1-5 shooting, his polished game finished him strong with 10-19 accuracy the rest of the way for another close, comeback win in his stadium. The usual heroics were on display for the last time ever before the playoffs. And NBC led the charge with a half-hour tribute to the Greatest Ever before the game. MJ closed it out in customary fashion against his now, weakening NY rivals but the old emotions were still there. And through it all, the eerily calm demeanor in which MJ dominated made it seem like he was just tuning up and scrimmaging for the upcoming real season. And we all know what happened then. Michael Jordan 1998 Finals: Gm 1 Vs. Utah Jazz, 33pts Out of Michael Jordan's career 179 playoff games, he has the astonishing record of 109 playoff games with 30+pts so this one might be lucky to make his list of top 100 playoff games if one wants to judge it on efficiency and victory. However, all MJ games - wins or losses - should be required viewing because of Magic Johnson's superlative quote: "...even if he hits just one shot, it might be the most amazing shot you've ever seen." Well, 35 year-old MJ went 13-29 here (which was respectable for the Finals but still a paltry 45% by his standards) and even with the tough loss, there was no doubt the smooth fades and perimeter-post footwork alone were worth our paycheck and 2.5 hours. But more importantly, this was the last leg of MJ's historic dominance and the world was watching closely. Curious non-basketball fans who never saw one basketball game were tuned in to this one. As underdogs for the first time during the running of the Bulls, some experts suddenly lost their minds and predicted MJ would go out losing because the team was too old with an average age of almost 32 years. And when the Bulls let this one get away at the last second in OT, those voices grew louder and were adamantly set in stone. Bob Costas himself just knew it was over for the Bulls. And what, one might ask, was I thinking during this entire time? The Bulls were coming off a grueling 7 gamer against the Pacers with just 2 days rest (which was only the 2nd time MJ was pushed to 7 games during his reign); the Jazz were motivated and hungry with 10 days rest; the game was in the loudest arena at Utah; two buckets by MJ were called off in crunch time that might have changed the outcome; the game went to OT with MJ and the rest at half-speed still bringing them back in the 4th; and it took a tremendous, brilliant shot by Stockton to eke out the win for Utah in the last few possessions. So what was I thinking? I knew right then MJ had ring #6 in the bag. Tags: Michael Jordan Utah Jazz Finals Magic Shaq Karl Malone Stockton Pippen Lebron Wade Iverson Kobe Bulls Yao Lakers Garnett |

Michael Jordan 1992: 44pts Vs. Boston Celtics, Larry Bird The most efficient player in history would get his 3rd game over 40pts in just the 4th game of the young season. Larry Legend was his usual legendary self with a brilliant game - scoring 30 on 13-22 shooting and 9 assists. But wait, MJ would switch gears as he normally did against the greatest teams on the road. This time, he would hit 12 of his first 15 shots for 41 after 3 quarters in the hallowed Boston Garden - adding along the way a few moves we'd never seen before (as was the case with every game). With the outcome pretty much in the bag, MJ came in for two minutes in the 4th, hit one more three for the nail in the coffin, and bowed out. Time to rest those legs in 1992 at age 29. There was a dynasty to build. (Sad to be reminded of blessed sharp-shooter Reggie Lewis and what he might have become.) Michael Jordan 1988: 47pts Vs. Utah Jazz, "Mel Turpin" Game A beastly game by MJ. This is the game where MJ dunks on Stockton and Utah's owner heckles MJ to pick on someone his own size so on the very next play, he powers one over 7-foot Mel Turpin saying, "Was he big enough?" while sauntering back down the court. But aside from that, this game was awesome to watch because of MJ's relentless attack on both ends of the floor. There has never been any player ever who has been able to give 100% on offense and 100% on defense at all times as this version of MJ. As his coach said, "MJ took every play - offense or defense - as a personal battle so he wanted to beat you on each and every play." And it showed perfectly here. En route to setting his NBA record for most blocks ever by a guard in this season (131), MJ was a blur, seemingly everywhere at all times. And on the offensive end, MJ was just his usual self. Utah's giants packed the lane so MJ had to pick his spots but his incredible athleticism could not be denied. With hanging jumpers and hanging passes everywhere, MJ took the Bulls from the brink of defeat once again to steal victory in the last minute. Just a routine day at the office with the routine spectacular shots from the bottomless grab-bag of tricks from MJ circa 1988.
