Magnificent blue bamboo, played by Dharrapuy This is the same instrument played by Darryl Dikarrnga Brown in another of my YouTube clips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSXjpWUDvO4 I made this recording of Dharrapuy for comparative purposes, so that you can hear how the same instrument sounds played by two different players. And how different could they be, Darryl being a mago player and Dharrapuy a yirdaki player! The rhythm played by Dharrapuy is just a made-up piece and not a ceremonial song. Garanyinyi (cicada) | yirdaki and singing by Dharrapuy This is the yirdaki rhythm and associated song for Garanyinyi (Cicada), as played and sung by David Dharrapuy The instrument is one made by Mangay Guyula, a Djambarrpuyngu clansman respected by many for his knowledge of country and his commitment to homelands development. His younger brother Yingiya is also a legend - he's the only Yolngu pilot I know of. It's obvious there talent in this family. Mangay typically makes yirdaki with a beautiful flared mouthpiece. I don't see much of that these days and it appears to be an older style of craftmanship. This is the last yirdaki I have from Mangay, several went to a museum in Japan. Richard Birrinbirrin talks about Djirrididi body painting Richard Birrinbirrin starred as the Honey Man in the epic Ten Canoes feature film and was also the associate producer for it. He is an artist, songman and community leader and resides at Ramingining in north-central Arnhem Land. He is also the current Chairman of ANKAAA (Association of Northern, Kimberley and Arnhem Aboriginal Artists). His father was Burritjnga (deceased) and his second father David Malangi (also deceased). David Dharrapuy is his nephew, his sister's son. Here, Birrinbirrin talks about the Djirrididi body painting and relates a small part of the Djan'kawu Sisters' story. Djirrididi means Kingfisher bird, a special bird for the people for whom the Djan'kawu were their progenitors. Birrinbirrin sings the Djirrididi song towards the end of this clip. It is a sacred song that has no didgeridoo accompaniment, it is the song the Djan'kawu Sisters themselves sang in the 'Dreamtime'. In this clip Birrinbirrin speaks his native tongue, Djinang, interspersed with English. Djinang is quite different in its vocabulary to Yolngu Matha, the sounds distinct too. This recording was made not only to document the meaning of Djirrididi and its ceremonial/religious significance, but also as an oral history project to preserve the Djinang language. Gupapuyngu Funeral Ceremony in Ramingining, 2008 This is a funeral ceremony for a Gupapuyngu woman. The ceremony was held at Ramingining in north-central Arnhem Land with three main groups participating: Gupapuyngu, Gumatj and Wangurri. The Gumatj came from Elcho Island, whilst the Wangurri arrived from Dhalinybuy outstation in eastern Arnhem Land. Three different yirdaki players played for their respective groups: Karl Ngalkanbuy for the Burarrwanga singers from Elcho Island, Andrew Mingama' for the Munyarryun singers from Dhalinybuy, and David Dharrapuy for the local Gupapuyngu singers. Marrngu (Possum): singing and yirdaki playing by Dharrapuy David Dharrapuy plays the yirdaki rhythm for Marrngu (Possum) and sings the associated song. Manany Gurruwiwi made the instrument played by Dharrapuy in this clip. It is a particularly good example of a yirdaki, very powerful acoustics with a great energy to it. Balgabalga (Hammerhead Shark): David Dharrapuy, yirdaki David Dharrapuy plays the yirdaki rhythm for Balgabalga (Hammerhead Shark) and sings the associated song. The instrument Dharrapuy is using is one made by Roy Burnyila, a seductive yirdaki with a deep sonorous voice that plays in the key of B flat. Dharrapuy explains the importance of Balgabalga to the Gupapuyngu people. When they see a dead Hammerhead Shark, they give it ceremony and bury it as though it were a human body. When news of such an event becomes known in a community - Milingimbi in particular where the vast majority of Gupapuyngu live - Yolngu cry for it as though it were a deceased family member. People stop what they are doing and proceed towards the water's edge, the body of the shark is lifted out of the water and wrapped in cloth, and then the shark is buried in the ground with dalkarra - special 'power names'. This is an old custom from a long time ago that is continued to be observed at Milingimbi. Burrmalala & Lorrpu (Cyclone & White Cockatoo): Dharrapuy This is a yirdaki made and painted by David Dharrapuy, Ramingining's main ceremonial yirdaki player. First he plays and sings Burrmalala (Cyclone) and then Lorrpu (White Cockatoo). Note the fine singing voice of Dharrapuy, very very similar to Djawa and Bonguwuy recorded by Alice Moyle in the 1960s. If you listen really closely to Dharrapuy singing Burrmalala, you'll hear the name "Walarri" mentioned. Every Yolngu personal name is found in song. "Walarri" means cyclone. Daygurrgurr-Gupapuyngu songs are among my favourite. The melodic structure of the songs are exquisite, demonstrating subtlety and range and immeasurable control. Love it! Dharrapuy is now a recognised manikaymirri (ceremonial songman). In the 1990s I only knew him as a yirdakimirri (didgeridoo player) but he has since "graduated" to the more difficult task of singing (playing yirdaki is considered among Yolngu as the relatively easier accomplishment). As well as being a manikaymirri, Dharrapuy has achieved the coveted status as dalkarramirri or ritual specialist, a position shared with his brothers Stanley Barrwitj and Tommy Yumunungbi. Very very few Yolngu achieve this status, perhaps one in several hundred. That Dharrapuy is still in his 30s speaks volumes of his capability and the trust placed in him by elders. Gupapuyngu yirdaki played by David Dharrapuy This is a typical yirdaki used by the Daygurrgurr-Gupapuyngu clan, it has the sort of acoustic characteristics that are considered as quintessentially Gupapuyngu. The tune played by Dharrapuy is raki', Wunyburl - string, part of a very important song series. He explains that other clan groups (from Yirrkala, Elcho Island, Lake Evella etc.) use different types of yirdaki, but for the Gupapuyngu, this is their favoured type of yirdaki with the right pitch and sonic attributes. Turbo-charged Quincey Matjaki on supersonic F yirdaki If Adam Marrilaga were the ultimate yirdaki technician, his older brother Quincey Matjaki must surely come a close second. Matjaki has come a long way since I first heard him play yirdaki. Perhaps he was out of practice then, or has improved considerably since, but whichever way it might be, this clip kicks arse. Listen to Matjaki's technical execution as well as the pace he manages to get up to, he maintains very strong technique even when pumping it at blistering speed. The finesse of Larry Winiwini and the precision of Marrilaga are apparent in Matjaki's style of play. It will be hard to let go of this stick, a stunning instrument made by Bruce Burrngupurrngu with concentrated power. The acoustics are finely structure with outstanding resolution, super-sweet overtone note, and ochre-rendered Dhalwangu miny'tji to die for. This is a yirdaki of high pedigree and cultural integrity, the result of a Burrngupurrngu-Djul'djul husband and wife team. Burrngupurrngu and Djul'djul talked at length over the phone about this yirdaki before I finally set eyes on this spectacular piece of work. David Dharrapuy E flat yirdaki This is one of David Dharrapuy's yirdaki which he had been using in Ramingining, it plays in the key of E flat fundamental with a G overtone note. It is a lovely instrument, quite different to the usual fare from eastern Arnhem Land with a distinct voice all its own. Dharrapuy plays a typical tune for Gupapuyngu manikay (ceremonial song) at the start and then offers something more fanciful at the end. Superstar Geoffrey Gurrumul playing yirdaki Gurrumul is pretty handy on the yirdaki as he is on almost every imaginable musical instrument. Here he is at home. His stereo system takes pride of place inside where Gurrumul spends much of his time listening to his favourite songs. It is a nice irony that whilst Geoffrey idolizes many singer-songwriters, he himself has become a star in his own right and a favourite for many adoring fans.
