O muto asil, TODOR MAZAROFF tenor 1907-1975, 1940's The tenor, Todor Mazaroff, was born in Pavel Banja on 2 January 1907. After teaching at a folk school for two years he began his career with the Sofia National Opera. His debut there was in 1935 in a production of Prince Igor. In 1937 Mazaroff won a singing competition in Vienna and so impressed Bruno Walter that he was immediately awarded a contract with the Vienna State Opera. His debut was on September 9, 1937 as Radames. Since he spoke only Bulgarian at the time, his first roles there were sung in Bulgarian while the rest of the cast sang in German. He remained active there until 1953. Due to the outbreak of World War II he was unable to develop an international career. In 1939 he appeared at the Maggio Musicale in a new production of William Tell singing the difficult role of Arnoldo with great success. He repeated the same role at La Scala and the Rome Opera. In 1947 Mazaroff turned to the great tenor, Pertile, to study the role of Don Carlo. International appearances took him to La Scala, La Fenice, Prague, Moscow, Paris, Buenos Aires, etc. His appearances in the United States included Chicago, New York and San Francisco. While teaching at the Conservatory in Vienna between 1962 and 1964 he retired from singing in 1963. He gave his farewell tour in Bulgaria in 1968. Major roles in his career included Don Jose, Otello, Radames, Arnoldo, Canio, Manrico, Andrea Chenier, Turrido and the Calif in Turandot. Todor Mazaroff died in Vienna on September 19, 1975. "Ca c'est Paris" Mistinguett & Fred Melé's Orch. 1926 Maybe Mis greatest populair hit, people in many countries of Europe sang it for pleasure in pubs and on parties, as a kid in the 1950's it was one of the first songs I could sing not through the radio or disc but through the elderly members of my family. I never found it on 78 rpm disc, records of Mis are rarities, the song must have been made popular through sheet music. Tags: "Ca c'est Paris" Mistinguett Fred Melé's Orch. 1926 78 rpm record |

John O'Sullivan (1878-1948) tenor "O Paradiso" 1926 The Irish tenor John O'Sullivan was the possessor of a powerful and brilliant tenor voice and his clarion high notes were greatly appreciated by his countryman, James Joyce. It is a remarkable instrument; the high notes, in a big theatre, must have made a tremendous impression but his singing is verry provincial, too vehement, the line not securely based. A pronounced vibrato present throughout the voice makes it impossible for him to produce the sustained legato necessery for Vasco's "O Paradiso". Vina Bovy, soprano "La Traviata" Grand air part 2, 1936 second part of the great aria of Violetta in the first act of "La Traviata", what I like in Bovy's voice is the sensual timbre of the voice, the coloratura roles are not her cup of tea, but as a lyrical french schooled soprano she was a must. Here live recordings at the Met give us a better idea than her few studio recordings. Probably she felt that only a part of her talent was captured by the microphone and therefor her recorded legacy is small. About a dozen sides for HMV and 4 with Thill for Columbia. Pictures from my personal collection, no copywright. Tags: Vina Bovy soprano "La Traviata" Grand air part 1936 |
