Jesus Was a Crossmaker - Judee Sill Like her song Crossmaker, Judee sill was a woman who knew about playing out unhealthy and damaging scripts. In this song, my favorite of hers and easily one of my all time favorite songs ever, Judee sings about inability to resist what we know is bad for us, about going into it with the knowledge that we'll be left empty and hurt at the end and playing it out anyway. Judee's life was very much like that. In and out of jail for bad checks, robbery and drug addiction, Judee's music is rich with themes of redemption, love, vulnerability and humility. Classically trained, Judee uses multi-layered overdubs and full orchestral arrangements to create complex melodies and four-part choral harmony that give her songs a texture that intrigues and lends itself to multiple listens. This is the studio recorded version of Crossmaker from her debut album Judee Sill, released in 1971. Her melody here is gorgeous and sentimental and sad, much like the artist herself, who died only 8 years later. Tags: Judee Sill 70s Folk Singer Songwriter Crossmaker |

United We Stand - Brotherhood of Man Brotherhood of Man and The New Seekers are among a handful of 70s pop-folk artists who were very effective in utilizing full choral harmonies in their sound to evoke the sense of togetherness and oneness characteristic of the era. This is United We Stand by Euro-pop group Brotherhood of Man, who ran the top of the British pop charts several times from 1970 to 1976, but only achieved American radio play with this LP. Frankly, this song just melts me. It's corny, it's idealistic, it's lyrics are simple but it's melodies are gorgeous, and the original members here (Tony Hillard, Tony Burrows, Sunny Leslie and Sue Glover) are earnest and true in their presentation. Like most choral pop groups, the band would endure an endless shuffle of members, and by 1976 none of the original four remained, but the innocence, optimism and sweetness of this track always will. Thank You (Bonnie Raitt) Recorded in 1971, this track is off Bonnie's first LP, self titled Bonnie Raitt, when she was only 21. Far from her 80s & 90s pop-country hits, this song gets under your skin like good blues should, and feels easy to me, like a Saturday afternoon or the way you feel sated and full up after a good meal in the company of someone you love. This will always be my Bonnie Raitt. If you haven't taken a listen yet, track down this album and also her second album, Give It Up, released in 1972. She has never been better than she is across these two albums, she and her songs and her guitar recording in a cabin in the woods with her pared down band. I love the intimacy. Simply gorgeous. Curtis Mayfield - So In Love The brass and organ riffs in this song break my heart in pieces, and put it back together again every chorus. Listening to this song feels like being in love feels to me, earnest and hopeful and sad all at the same time. Curtis's music is like that, is open and vulnerable in ways that really reasonate with me. I think this is one of his best. Tags: Curtis Mayfield So In Love |

A Better Place to Be Harry Chapin singing A Better Place to Be from Greatest Stories Live. The video transitions are a little slow due to the length of the song, and begins with a black screen for about the first minute, while Harry does his live bit about writing the song before the pics begin. The music speaks for itself. Amazing. Photos are stock images from various places around the net. No copyright infringement intended. Tags: Harry Chapin Greatest Stories Live Better Place to Be |

Nina Simone: Here Comes the Sun Nina Simone doing a very lovely cover of the Beatles' Here Comes the Sun. The piano lends a carefree, uplifting tone to the song, and is probably my favorite version. Studio Version Dixie Chicks Star Spangled Banner This is the very beautiful studio version of the Dixie Chicks performing the National Anthem. They originally performed live at the opening of the Super Bowl in 2003. There are several clips of them doing it live at the game available, but I wanted to post a clean studio (acapella) version that brings out the harmonies (which get lost amid the crowd cheering in the live clips). This is the first time I ever heard the National Anthem and realized what a lovely song it really is. The pics in the vid are stock images I pulled off the net to qualify as a video.
