1980 Sandra and Val Bezic - 1st World Pro While pro skating events have been around for decades, this was a first attempt by promoters at big time, high prize money, televised events. The leggy Sandra Bezic gave a fine performance. Note the lovely Janet Lynn Layback in the opening. Tags: 1980 World Pro pairs Sandra Val Bezic Canada Janet Lynn Robin Cousins |

1998 Susanna Rahkamo - Petri Kokko Finland (Olym EXB) This is an exhibition re-do of one of my favorite ice dancing performaces. No one ever said, specifically, just what this is about.....but I have always interpreted it as "THE INNEBRIATED BRIDE". Watching this, I am inspired that perhaps a nervous young woman decided to take "just a little" fortification on her big day from perhaps a bottle of wine. Not being particularly experienced in strong spirits, she became just a little overwhelmed. Petri is such a strong, supportive lead, he reminds me of a very loving husband trying, in vain many times, to get his betrothed to the altar. There seems to be a horrible footwear choice, and keeping the white dress in place occupies his time to a substantial degree. Susanna's performance is much in the vein of Lucille Ball, and equally funny.....and endearing. 5 stars!!! The Death of Ice Dancing!!!! 1998 In 1998, the International Olympic Committee threatened to remove ice dancing from the Winter Games if it could not be changed into a more competitive event. This resulted in the implementation of a bizarre and arcane points scoring system that ultimately chased every afficianado (and even ticket paying patrons) away in disgust....and has since, unfortunately, spread to the free skating events. This has been a shame because other simpler changes 'might' have produced an acceptable result with less chaos. Gus Lussi advocated 40 years ago for a rule to "toss out" the high and low mark for each skater. This would have had the effect of confounding efforts at colusion, and fought the majority panel effect! I have been a skating fan since 1960, but even I refuse to watch an ice dance OD. There came a day when I simply could no longer tolerate enduring one more intermitable straight line footwork sequence!! I'm just not interested in that concept. The sport could have taken cues from the ballroom world (or even dog show events), and added more judges, sequestering a judges pool and selecting event judges at the last minute (to reduce efforts at subterfuge). There has always been a problem with the judging accredidation process which demands that potential judges get the results right (correct). This encourages the arena consultations we have all seen taking place, and late night phone calls to make sure a judge ends up with the right scorecard. An event has to be judged on the actions that take place on the ice, that night. Judges should have the freedom to mark accordingly. Most judges and officials have been around for decades. Term limits for officials should be adopted, and judges should only be allowed to judge at World or National levels a couple of times. This might allow them to voice their own opinions, which is fine as long as they can document their markings in the light of public scrutiny. Changes like this might have given the sport a chance to stab at fairness. I am reminded of a remark made by European TV commentator (and 1948 Olympian) Eva Pawlik, who objected to the use of electronic scoring systems. She felt that if "judges were required to face the audience and stand center ice (with their old card boxes) and report a result, they might be more inclined put a bit more effort into it." Certainly, all judges should be able to face the world press. Instead we now have a system of judges confidentiality, with no accountabilty. Even with the changes, the 2002 Olympics brought even more corruption to light. "To blame you must have proof!" quotes one sactimonious judge (who can hardly keep from grinning while she speaks) in this segment. Well, they found plenty of proof in Salt Lake City, just 4 years later. We also catch a glimpse of the political machine at work here with condemnation from Mr. Cinquanta, who would later discourage many with his heavy handed dealings with the French contingent and others. Far to many suspended judges return just a few years later to continue their good work!! (See Joyce Goodwins "THE SECOND MARK" for eye opening details.) Sad also that they felt the need to remove the 6.0 scoring results. Since the new point totals often add to a score around 200, it would have been easy to factor it by 3, and round off to a 600 total that could then have the decimal applied. This might have even provided some additional fairness and excitement thru rounding chance. An ordinal ranking system does provide fair results, if applied honestly. Many view skating as a freak show these days. The skaters are freaks of nature, the sport unattainable for commoners, the judges and officials are freaks, and there is nothing for a skating fan to connect with. Empty arenas for major events, and lower TV ratings should be getting someones attention. American television audiences especially should be exercising their power as consumers, and demanding something better.....or simply turn off their sets. I find the corruption endemic and systemic. We should follow the advise of the American UN ambassador, John Bolton, who advocates democratic nations leaving the UN and re-forming their own world organization. I would encourage the United States, Canada, Japan, China, and any European nation that wants to join us, to leave the ISU and form a new governing body. We have tolerated to much abuse, for to long. 1980 Peggy Fleming - Professional Here's a bit of Peggy in a Las Vegas way you probably have not seen her before. Get down, gurrll! Just for the record, DISCO had already died a few years before 1980. This is also an early example of video editing technology. A split screen, mirror skating, and fades are all common personal computer tricks of the trade now, but artistically, this is probably the first time many people saw this kind of thing. A creative effort! Tags: figure skating 1980 Peggy Fleming Professional DISCO Las Vega |

1996 Stephanie Stieglar John Zimmerman - US Nationals Dynamic skating just coarses through the blood of the Stieglar family, and here we see a first glimpse of some exciting, flamboyant pair skaters. Artistry is just laying all over the ice. John would eventually follow the mold of American pairs skating and switch to yet a third partner, Kyoko Ina, and achieve great success. Stephanie would retire, leaving the ice to her gifted younger brother and sister, Tiffany and Johnny. Interestingly, watching this video, I can just FEEL that 4th minute exhaustion that envelopes everyone's free skating performances. Here John stumbles a bit, but finds his way to the end of the program. Most people simply don't realize how challenging this competitive skating can be. 1974 Melissa Militano Johhny Johns Worlds LP HOLY KATSENJAMMER!!! Melissa and Johnny take to Worlds for the first time, creating some of skating's legendary COMMENTARY!!! For months afterwards, in rinks all across America, skaters greeted each others falls with Dick's blurted reaction. It is actually a common expression from a 1920's Sunday Comic Strip, "The Katsenjammer Kids," (which I used to read still in the 1950's). But Dick introduced it to a new generation, and hopefully now, does so again with this post!!! I would encourage all young skaters to replace their rather colorful and risque lanquage of today, with this timeless phrase. Melissa had skated with her brother Mark, and Johnny had earlier skated pairs with Emily Benneson (and dance with Mary Karen Campbell). 1974 was an innovative year for triple jumping. This was the first Pairs attempt at a throw triple loop. Gordy McKellen attempted a triple axel in the mens event, and triple lutzes had reappeared at Europeans with Laszlo Vajda of Hungary successfully repeating Don Jacksons athletic feat! Jan Hoffman also landed one with a turn out, Minuro Sano (Japan) and Haig Oundjian (Great Britain) also made attempts. This is my first effort at matching video with an old audio tape from Wide World of Sports. As you can tell eventually, the video runs just a tad faster than the audio, but you get a good version of a very memorable moment. 1998 Tonia Kwiatkowski - Worlds SP United States Some thought I was not appreciative enough of Tonia with my earlier entry. I chose an early piece because so many of her performances were already posted. Always a hot short program skater (and most of them are not yet posted here), Tonia boosted her performance in 1998 with a maturing artistic sensibility. Madamme Butterfly is beautiful music, and when you add beautiful skating, you entran'ce a lot of people. She still has one of the most unusual lutz preparations ever devised, and I can't say I approve over her turning around backwards to step into a double axel, but if it's the new technique, so be it. A very popular and successful American skater. Tags: figure skating 1998 Tonia Kwiatkowski Worlds SP Madame Butterfly United States |

1998 Anna Rechnio - Poland One of the most delightful occurances of 1998 was the spectacular vault of Anna Rechnio from 19th at the Olympics, to SECOND place at Worlds after the short program. A fast, dynamic skater who just exuded excitement! Although I thought her long program was adequate to claim a step on the podium, the judges somewhat controversialy dropped her to 4th. Shame, because it would have been Poland's first ladies medal. One of the few who can skate well to the music of "Gone with the Wind", which naturally appealled to my Atlanta roots. Excellent choreography. Tags: figure skating 1998 Anna Rechnio Poland ladies SP short program gone with the wind margaret mitchell atlanta civil war |

1998 Elena Sokolova - Worlds SP Russia This girl is very popular on YOUTUBE, but I think I may have a post that has not been seen yet! Elena would rise to the top and claim a World Silver Medal in 2003 (Washington) and a couple of European Bronze medals, but didn't seem to enjoy skating enough to practice the long hours required for dominating success. She always had it in her, and would hit successful programs now and again, but managed to faulter on to many occasions. A very beautiful, and charismatic young woman. 1998 Elena Liashenko - Worlds SP Ukraine Elena knocked on the door of the World podium for many years, and like the music says here, "If it takes forever, we were willing to wait for her!" She was a strong jumper, sometimes remeniscent of Dorothy Hamill (although in this program she bears a striking resemblance to Linda Fratianne), who would eventually put out a number of very memorable programs. She finally won a European Silver in 2004 and a Bronze in 2005. Tags: figure skating 1998 Elena Liashenko Ukraine Worlds SP |

1948 Dick Button - Worlds - Davos, Switzerland You can't get enough Dick Button!! This is how you do a sit spin kids!!!! Just a snippet from a newsreel about his "Grand Slam" achievement. Many thought it wrong to allow North Americans into the European Championships, especially since skating in general had been devastated by World War II. Some thought the skating standard would be higher, since Americans and Canadians had been practising unencumbered. In the future, only Europeans would be allowed. 1998 Vanessa Gusmeroli Worlds SP France After an exciting start as World Bronze medalist for France in 1997, Vanessa had trouble keeping the entire package together afterwards. She was a strong, vibrant, competent skater who reminded me a bit of a leggy Tonya Harding! She had one delightful move, not shown to completion here, where she would simply drop to the ice in a full split position, and then pull herself right back up, unassisted by hands!! If you know much about edges, and the side of your boot, you know just how risky that particular move was. It certainly delighted audiences. 1998 Laetitia Hubert - Worlds SP France Another in the a long series of beautiful French girls who came to the fore in the 90's. An innovative, risk taking, musical skater who deighted audiences with interesting material. She could have excelled magnificantly in an event such as 'solo ice dancing', focusing soley on the movement and artistry of skating on ice. A personal favorite of mine. 1980 Vicki Heasley Robert Wagenhoffer US Nationals LP I don't ordinarily like posting a less than flawless program for a skater, but this team is so popular, and I have had repeated requests for this program. Although Vicki and Robert had been World team members in 1979, a few bounces across the ice during this number allowed Sheryl Franks and Mike Bottecelli to claim an Olympic berth, in a very competitive event. 1974 Melissa Militano Johhny Johns Nationals LP Melissa and Johnny finish with a fine long program at US Nationals.
