NRANK ENGAN - ILS SONT TOMBES - ARMENIAN VERSION The world famous song of Aznavour and Garvarentz "Ils Sont Tombés"´, here performed by the greatest armenian folk singer Mrs.Mirta Satdjian, live in a public concert in tribute of the millions of victims of the Armenian Holocaust of 1915-23 commited by the turk-otoman empire and the "father of the new Turkey" Mustafá Kemal. Please note that the artist Mirta Satdjian´s vocal training is focalized on armenian folkloric music, which is considerably difficult and different from melodic and pop singing techniques. Lyrics of the original song (not tralated to armenian in this song) Ils sont tombés sans trop savoir pourquoi Hommes, femmes et enfants qui ne voulaient que vivre Avec des gestes lourds comme des hommes ivres Mutilés, massacrés les yeux ouverts d'effroi Ils sont tombés en invoquant leur Dieu Au seuil de leur église ou le pas de leur porte En troupeaux de désert titubant en cohorte Terrassés par la soif, la faim, le fer, le feu Nul n'éleva la voix dans un monde euphorique Tandis que croupissait un peuple dans son sang L' Europe découvrait le jazz et sa musique Les plaintes de trompettes couvraient les cris d'enfants Ils sont tombés pudiquement sans bruit Par milliers, par millions, sans que le monde bouge Devenant un instant minuscules fleurs rouges Recouverts par un vent de sable et puis d'oubli Ils sont tombés les yeux pleins de soleil Comme un oiseau qu'en vol une balle fracasse Pour mourir n'importe où et sans laisser de traces Ignorés, oubliés dans leur dernier sommeil Ils sont tombés en croyant ingénus Que leurs enfants pourraient continuer leur enfance Qu'un jour ils fouleraient des terres d'espérance Dans des pays ouverts d'hommes aux mains tendues Moi je suis de ce peuple qui dort sans sépulture Qu'a choisi de mourir sans abdiquer sa foi Qui n'a jamais baissé la tête sous l'injure Qui survit malgré tout et qui ne se plaint pas Ils sont tombés pour entrer dans la nuit Éternelle des temps au bout de leur courage La mort les a frappés sans demander leur âge Puisqu'ils étaient fautifs d'être enfants d'Arménie Tags: NRANK ENGAN ILS SONT TOMBES AZNAVOUR SATDJIAN ARMENIAN MUSIC |

He displayed an unparalleled enthusiasm whenever and wherever he walked on the stage. He left behind his distinctive school of singing a delightful collection of Armenian folk and patriotic songs and a living legacy in the minds of his contemporaries. SAYAT NOVA (1712-1795) The great Armenian troubadour Sayat Nova was born in 1712 to a peasant family in the village of Sanahin, not far from Tiflis, the capital of Georgia. Named Haroutiun Sayatyan at birth, the great musician and lyric poet is remembered by the Armenians as Sayat Nova or "King of Songs", an homage to his status in the Armenian community. As a boy, Haroutiun gained regional recognition for his fine singing voice, interpretations of folk songs, and as an emerging virtuoso of the kemenche (a violin-like instrument with 3 strings, tuned in 4ths and played with a bow, using the German-style bowing often employed by bass players. In his early teens the Sayatyan family moved to Tiflis, the capital of the Kingdom of Georgia. Tiflis, or Tbilisi, was then as it remains today, an important center of Armenian culture, music and literature. It is generally acknowledged that Sayat Nova served as an apprentice to a weaver. The title "kousan" is added as a prefix to the name of a well known artist. (i.e. Kousan Ashot, Kousan Setrag, etc.) Had Haroutiun not been endowed with the name Sayat Nova, he is likely to have been known as Kousan Haroutiun. Sayat Nova was renowned for his superb command of the Armenian language. But his fluency in Georgian, Persian, and Azerbaijani allowed him to perform for the widest possible audience, and to gain fame far beyond his own ethnic group. The cosmopolitan community of Tiflis embraced him and made this young Armenian genius their own. The known body of songs attributed to Sayat Nova numbers about 220, the true volume of work is likely to have been in the thousands. It should be noted that these works, though notated in the 19th century, have been largely passed down as an aural tradition. As his fame spread, Sayat Nova was summoned to the Court of Heracle II, the 18th century King of Georgia. The King placed him in the service of the Court as a Royal Musician and Poet. His fall from grace in the Court is likely to have been caused by his love for the King's sister, Princess Anna. The King, fearing the power and influence that would likely accrue to Sayat Nova as a result of a marriage to Anna, expelled the great kousan from the Court. Sayat Nova, the greatest of the Armenia kousans, was killed in 1795, by the invading forces of the Persian Knight, Agha Mohammed Khan. He is the most revered of all the Armenian troubadours.

Because of his singing prowess, he decided to teach music at the Seminary after he completed his studies. In 1896, Soghomon was ordained a monk or "Apegha" of the Armenian Apostolic Church. A few years later he was ordained a "Vartabed", and as is the practice in the Armenian Church, assumed his new name "Komitas"(or Gomidas). Komitas learned a great deal of music from the monks and continued to study music with the famous composer Kara-Murza, which eventually led Komitas into both secular and religious music. Komitas continued studying music (in Berlin), and in 1896, he was awarded a doctorate degree in musicology. He later returned to Etchmiadzin as a choir director, and Instructor of music at the Seminary. Komitas wrote over three thousand songs in Armenian, Arabic, Kurdish, and Persian, and also contributed significantly to the modern Armenian Badarak (mass). His main contribution was to rediscover Armenian folk music. He spent years traveling throughout the provinces and visiting many villages listening to native songs and dances, and making notes of them for further analysis. His work in arranging and collating the folk music he had collected over the years eventually became excellent songs for chorus music, and made the public aware of the existence of true Armenian music. In addition to the folk music, Komitas arranged the entire music of the Divine Liturgy (Surp Badarak) of the Armenian Apostolic Church, for male voices. The internationally known priest was the first non-European to be a member of the International Music Society. Komitas performed concerts in Paris, Geneva, Berne, Constantinople, Venice, and Alexandria. It is interesting to note that in the spring of 1915, during the imprisonment of more or less 700 leaders of the Armenian community for their killing, Komitas too was taken into custody. Through the efforts of Henry Morgenthau, Ambassador from the United States of America in turkey, and the turkish poet Mehmet Emin Yurdakul, who admired Komitas' work, Komitas was released. After the April 24, 1915 massacres of the Armenian people by the Turks, he succumbed to mental and physical anguish and never fully recovered. Komitas lived as if a walking corpse for the next twenty years. The revered holy man died in Paris on October 22, 1935 in a mental hospital. One year after his death his ashes were transferred to Yerevan and interred in the Yerevan Pantheon. In the 1950's his manuscripts were transported from Paris to Yerevan where they were being studied and published. Ierginkn ambel a (The Sky is Cloudy) - Gomidas Vartabed This is one of the most important songs composed by the armenian priest Gomidas Vartabed. Its lyrics tells about his feelings in a cloudy-rainy day (pay attention at the pizzicatos remembering us the falling drops of rain). He wrote: "The sky is cloudy... what a sweet tune... I came and pass at her (house´s) door. My beloved is there...". GOMIDAS VARTABED or KOMITAS (1869-1915) One of the most renowned Armenian Churchmen and musician of modern times was Gomidas Vartabed, also known as Komitas. He was born Soghomon Soghomonian in Keutahya, Asia Minor, in 1869. Komitas wrote over three thousand songs in Armenian, Arabic, Kurdish, and Persian, and also contributed significantly to the modern Armenian Badarak (the holy mass). His main contribution was to rediscover Armenian folk music and "to rescue" the genuine armenian rythms and harmonies from the influence of persian, turkish, arabic or other foreign cadences or styles. He spent years traveling throughout the historical armenian provinces (actually the third eastern part of turkey) and visiting many villages listening to native songs and dances, and making notes of them for further analysis. His work in arranging and collating the folk music he had collected over the years, eventually became excellent songs for 4 voices chorus music, and made the public aware of the existence of true classic armenian music. In addition to the folk music, Komitas arranged the entire music of the Divine Liturgy (Surp Badarak) of the Armenian Apostholic Church, for male voices sung every sunday morning in many churches of the armenian diaspora. The internationally known priest was the first non-European to be a member of the International Music Society. Komitas performed concerts in Paris, Geneva, Berne, Constantinople, Venice, and Alexandria. It is interesting to note that in the spring of 1915, during the imprisonment of 700 leaders of the armenian community in turkey for their killing, Gomidas too was taken into custody. Through the efforts of Henry Morgenthau, Ambassador from the United States of America in turkey, and the turkish poet Mehmet Emin Yurdakul, who admired Gomitas' work, Father Gomitas was released. After the April 24, 1915 massacres of the armenian people by the turks, he succumbed to mental deep depression and physical anguish and never fully recovered. THE GOMIDAS STRING QUARTET Was Founded in Moscow in November 1924 by four talented Armenian students of Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory: Avet Gabrielyan - 1st violin, Levon Ogandjanyan - 2nd violin, Michael Terian - viola, Sergey Aslamazian - cello, the oldest performing quartet in the world. Made first public performance in February 1925. The oldest in the world and most famous Armenian music group carries the name of Komitas (Soghomon Soghomonian, 1869-1915), a hiermonk whose genius brought a renaissance to Armenian music at the turn of the XX-th century. Performed with S. Richter, N. Dorliak, E. Gilels, D. Shostakovich, M. Rostropovich, Merjanov, Igumnov, Walter Zeufert, Mario Brunello and other prominent musicians. Aram Khachaturian described the quartet as the jewel of the musical culture of Armenia. Many armenian and foreign composers dedicate their works to the quartet. You can read and listen about Gomidas life and work in KOMITAS.AM. Enjoy it. Tags: ARMENIAN GOMIDAS KOMITAS STRING QUARTET |
