Edge Case In software engineering parlance, an edge case is any situation that is so remote that it only exists on the edge of possibility. Sometimes edge cases require more attention than other more common situations because a system designed for the center can crash when applied to the edge. On the other hand, the expression can also be used in the course of a design discussion to describe the insignificance of an expected contingency; the implication being that anything that exists on the edges can be brushed aside. This video was captured during the inaugural feedback session conducted at Studio II in Allston, Mass. Two projection feedback setups were positioned side by side, so that only their extreme edges were connected, allowing imagery created on one side to jump to the other. This video has no sound. Optical Resonance Theory Optical resonance occurs when a live image of a physical surface is continually superimposed upon itself. This causes an exaggeration of all prominent visual features of the projection surface. Optical resonance can be triggered through slight imbalances in a video frames level of luminance or chroma. Illuminant resonance begins on any rounded surface that can provide a focused spot of reflected light. Chromatic resonance occurs when there is a close similarity between the color received by the lens and the color that is cast upon the subject by the video projector. this really happened By connecting a video camera to a large LCD television and aiming the camera almost directly at the center of the screen, patterns emerge that to some extent can be shaped and molded with the hands. This is due to a tendency for the video stream to achieve equilibrium of overall brightness when the camera´s auto-exposure feature is enabled. The color variations were brought about by maximizing the color saturation and balance controls on the television screen. When the highest level of stability has been achieved, a gelatinous entity takes form, which exhibits life-like qualities. The colors that undulate over what appears to be a three-dimensional surface shimmer as if composed of some liquid substance. Tags: video feedback |

streamers One summer evening in 2006, a non-profit art organization named iKatun held a fundraiser in their Waltham loft space. It was a festive occasion, and there were many performances of vaudevillian acts, some with burlesque sensibilities. I felt honored to be invited to set up my equipment in an adjacent hallway and perform experiments with light, even though I was in the direct path to the fire escape where the smokers congregated. In these segments, I attached multi-colored steamers to the wall and directed a fan at them, while maintaining a stable video feedback pattern on the wall itself. Eventually it was possible to step back and allow the system to express itself in ways that were strictly deterministic but impossible to predict. Tags: streamers |

bugs This effect is created by successively resizing a very small image by adding one extra row and one extra column with every iteration. This set of experiments starts from a "seed" image that is 3 pixels wide and 3 pixels tall; an algorithm stored within a popular digital editing tool is then used to resize that image to 4x4, then 5x5, and so on. Because of the particular features of the algorithm used to perform this expansion, slight distortions occur that are magnified and embellished upon in succeeding generations. Eventually coherent shapes and patterns emerge, even though the expansion algorithm is pixel-based and does not manage or even recognize the existence of such patterns. Tags: bugs |

Inertia The streets of New York City are never calm, but during the final days of August in 2004, there was an unrest of such proportions that, at times, traffic was stalled by masses of people who took to the street without obtaining permits to march. On August 30th, one day before the widely anticipated events of "A31" which would result in 1200 arrests throughout the city, a march beginning at the United Nations and ending at Madison Square Garden was inexplicably sanctioned by the police, even though it was one of the largest acts of civil disobedience that had ever occurred in the city. My camera was placed on a stone wall as they passed. Tags: Inertia |

16th St. Tactical, part 1 On September 14 2004, two weeks to the hour after their arrests with 1200 others during the Republican National Convention, two detainees described their experiences on a live cable access show which was broadcast in Somerville Massachusetts. The detainees were Charles Shaw, a prominent member of the Green Party at the time and editor of an online magazine devoted to political issues; and Mike Hall, the producer of the show and video journalist who was held in police custody for nearly two days. Joining the panel was Savic Rasovic, a self-proclaimed propagandist from Montenegro, who managed a transcontinental media organization from Boston. Participants: Ellen Braune (E.B.): street interviewer. Michael Hall (M.H.): videographer and detainee. Savic Rasovic (S.R.): political commentator. Charles Shaw (C.S.): Green Party Co-Chair and detainee. Rich Schieferdecker (R.S.): host. M.H.: On August 31st, there were a number of civil disobedience actions that were planned, and I didn't know the exact time or location of these actions, because they were kept fairly secret. But I was in Union Square that evening, and looking around, I could tell that something was about to happen; that there were very heartfelt expressions of dissatisfaction amongst the crowd, and passionate speeches. M.H.: I found a marching band that was getting ready to march into the street, they were setting up in Union Square. And I thought it was possible that they could be starting this whole business. So, I kept my eye on them, and sure enough, they launched into the street, in defiance of a police order that they get a permit before they march. R.S.: Did the police make their presence known? M.H.: Absolutely. They were in the square, they had a parameter around the square, their presence was well known. They had motor scooters, bicycles and in fact, paddy wagons and busses on the street. But this was typical for the entire time I was in New York, since Sunday. That the police were making their presence known, but just basically to contain the peace. In fact, there were demonstrations the day before, which were also not permitted, which the police allowed to pursue without confrontation. So, I figured at the time that there would be no problems, that I could continue documenting this protest, and not be apprehended by the police. R.S.: Savic, you were at the Sunday demonstrations, is that right? And that went off peacefully, yes? S.R.: It did. Mike called me and said he is going, so I thought, I don't want to just go to a protest, and participate as one of the whistling people, I wanted to do something. So, I thought I could assist him, carry equipment, do extra camera shots, whatever it is. And Sunday was great, because all these people, cops were nice. But I think if I were one of them I would have planned the whole thing days in advance, anyway. So I assumed that Sunday was nice because you don't want to abuse half a million people. S.R.: [Being interviewed on the street] I would like to say that besides George W. Bush, the main culprits for this situation we are in, lack of democracy, civil rights stripping, wars, you name it. Is, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News obviously, NPR, PBS, who did I forget who's major? UPN, all these media have failed. They have failed miserably to inform the public, they have failed to be truthful to themselves, and they have failed as journalists. I do not accept that as a journalist you can be a news reader. That is not journalism. E.B.: Why do you think that is? S.R.: Well it's not like somebody came down and told them not to, but they're owned by corporations, and it's a trend, right? They earn money by saying "wow, is lipstick dangerous for your lips?" They earn money for tag lines. People don't have time to bother with real knowledge. So thus the media says, we don't want to actually tell you anything, we just want to earn the money. I'm ranting because nobody's saying this. Everybody wants to be on the media's good side, why? We should ignore them. We should turn off our TVs, our radios, and turn to independent news sources online. Tags: 16th St. Tactical part |
