Something money can't buy There are some things money can't buy. This is one of them. (Note: I have no clue how much anything in this video actually cost. To be honest, having been there, it probably cost a lot more than what I listed, but this was all just for fun anyway, so I digress!) Jim Shorts 9 - Fresh Perspective Sometimes we can get so caught up in what we're filming that we forget that how we're filming is also important. In this episode of Jim Shorts, we're taking a look at freshening up your video skills by adding different camera angles to the mix. It makes the viewer thing "Hmmm...That's interesting" and keeps them entwined in your story. Tags: jim shorts ep 09 fresh perspective using camera angles |

Jim Shorts 7 - Three Point Lighting Three point lighting is the standard used to illuminate a subject for film, video, and even theatre application. To prove you can do this with cheap, store bought lighting, that's all I used in this. The Key light was a 500 Watt halogen shop light, set up at about the 2 o'clock position relative to my wife, just above the height of her head. The Fill light was a 50 watt halogen light set up at her 10 o'clock position, also just barely above her head. The backlight was a 150w light bulb in an aluminum reflector, mounted to the ceiling, at about her 5 o'clock. All in all, this lighting setup cost about 30 bucks if you don't own any of these lights, and costs nothing if you already own them. Give it a shot! YouTube the goat - the update Well, it's been almost 6 weeks since YouTube the Goat and his kid sister (pardon the pun) Google were born (yes, we named his sister Google). Here's a quick update, along with a bonus clip - my uncle milking a goat! Sorry for the poor quality/lack of background music/etc. I'm working on a couple new videos, and I didn't have time to really polish this one up. PS-I'm still amazed at all the "goat geniuses" out there who criticized YouTube's delivery in the first video. Look everyone, the goats are just fine! Go figure. What would my in-laws know about birthing goats? I mean, after all, they're only goat farmers! :-D Tags: somecallmejim youtube the goat update |

Jim Shorts 4 - Depth of Field Jim Shorts is a tutorial series on making better videos for home and YouTube alike. Depth of field is the term for how much of an area your camera keeps in focus. Moving your camera allows you to keep your subject clear, and make the background blurry. Of course, thanks to YouTube's video compression, it all looks blurry, but you get the point. In short: -Set your camera as far from your subject as possible. -USE A TRIPOD (Sorry, forgot that in the video!) -Open your Iris (Turn up your exposure if no iris control) -Use manual focus to make your subject crystal clear, while the background has a bit of fuzziness to it. Again, this looks much better uncompressed than it does here, but you get the point. Tags: jim shorts ep 04 depth of field |
