Pirith chanted with 2500 Maha Sangha (Buddhist Monks) All night pirith chanting with the participation of 2500 members of the Maha Sangha to invoke blessings on the President, the government, the war heroes and the nation, was held at the BMICH yesterday. The Sangha from all parts of the country joined in chanting pirith. This is the first time that such a pirith chanting was organised in Sri Lanka's history. The Defence Ministry, the Armed Forces and the Police jointly organised this pirith chanting. Members of the Sangha were conducted in a procession to the BMICH from the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress. Thereafter, the chanting of pirith took place in a gaily decorated "Pirith Mandapa". The chanting of pirith ended this morning. The chanting of pirith commenced under the patronage of President Rajapakse. Chancellor of the Kelaniya University the Ven. Dr. Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma thera delivered the main anusasana. Among those who participated were parliamentarians, heads of state establishments, public officials, officers of the Armed Forces and the Police and a large number of devotees. International monitors claim the East poll was free and fair Representatives of the Asian Elections Federation have said that the Eastern Provincial election had been conducted in a free and fair manner and with transparency. Foreign monitors carried out their work on election day and the day before polls in all three Districts of the Province. The group comprised 17 monitors from 10 Asian countries. They emphasised that no pre-election or post-election violence had been reported from the region. The Foreign Monitors were addressing a media conference at the Galadari Hotel in Colombo. Head of the Monitoring Group Ming Hua Sai, Teresita De Liyako Flores and General Ayub Azil addressed the journalists. They said they were satisfied that a peaceful and democratic election had been held in the East, which was earlier a war zone. They expressed their gratitude to the Election Commissioner for his untiring efforts in this respect. Senior Advisor in Philippines Teresita De Liyako Flores said they are actually satisfied over the situation that prevailed in the East. The poll was conducted peacefully and in a systematic manner. It was very clear to them that the election was free and fair due to the monitoring of areas in Batticaloa where less civilians lived. Deputy Chairman of the Afghan Election Commission General Ayub Azil said they had no complaints to be made on the poll. It was a beautiful day the election was held. There were no incidents during polling. The election was transparent. Commissioner of the Asian Election Monitoring Federation Ming Hua Sai said several organisations including PAFFREL monitored the election and in general it was held peacefully. Liberation of North is not very far - President Sri Lankan President Rajapakse claimed that the liberation of the Northern Province from the LTTE terrorists as the East is not very far. The President was addressing the United People's Freedom Alliance's May Day rally at the Mahaweli Stadium at Dehiattakandiya. The Freedom Alliance decided to hold its May Day rally in the Dehiattakandiya town, presided by the President, as a sign of respect to the armed forces. Hundreds of thousands of people representing all areas of the country joined in the Freedom Alliance May Day rally, which was held with the blessings of the Maha Sangha and the clergy of other religions. The President was conferred the honour of the working class. A special memento was presented to the President. Further addressing the rally, the President was optimistic that the Eastern civilians will display their gratitude at the forthcoming provincial polls. The President said it should be clearly mentioned that they are not ready to hand over the East, which was liberated. He opined that as Minister Maithripala Sirisena said this should not be a vote for Prabhakaran. It should not be forgotten that voting for UNP will be a vote for Prabhakaran. He said he is confident that the Eastern civilians will display their gratitude to the world. They are constructing roads and providing water and electricity for to reawaken the East. LTTE kills Sri Lanka's Tamil Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle Tamil Tigers (LTTE) killed another Tamil politician in a suicide bomb blast. Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle was killed following the blast in Welliweriya, Gampaha this morning. The blast occurred when he was about to flag off a marathon run as part of a Sinhala-Hindu New Year celebration event. Being a faithful Catholic, the Tamil Minister expressed his concerns over LTTE's occupation of scared Madhu church and the removal of the Madhu statue recently. A lawyer by profession, Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle began his political career in 1970 as a SLFP polling agent. Fourteen years later in 1984 he was appointed as the SLFP chief organizer of the Katana electorate. He successfully contested the 1989 parliamentary election from the seat and ever since then elected to the parliament five consecutive times in the years 1989, 1994, 2000, 2001 and 2004. By the time of his death he was the Chief Government whip and a Cabinet Minister. He had also been appointed the UPFA organizer for the Trincomalee district for the forthcoming provincial council elections in the East. Veteran marathon runner K.A Karunarathne, who was a national and South Asian marathon gold medalist, is also said to be among the dead.
