Swingtime "In The Mood" Is Swing Dancing America's Folk Dance? When Mrs. Merian Weiser dean of the dance department at Los Angeles, Pierce College hired me to teach the students and choreograph a folk dance for the college annual "Folk Dance Festival", I chose the SWING. What dance is your choice for America's folk dance? Please post your comments. Welcome to the Second exhibition of Dance Corp. The evolution of the dance in the United States of America has melded together ethnic dances from every part of the world. Many of these have become uniquely American combining Old World aesthetics with the energy and innovation of the 'Land of the Free. These are the movements-from the "clog" dances of the early West to the "soul" and "Jazz" of the South to the many variations of "swing" and "rock" in the twentieth century-that will be presented in their pure forms in a series of exhibitions by a company of many marvelous dancers and dance lovers. Just as the Individual cultures of the world have merged in the great 'melting pot" not into a stew but into a bouillabaisse where each individual flavor is important and distinct from the whole, so also the dance in America. Only through the tasting of these separate flavors can the full delight and greatness of the mixture be fully understood and enjoyed Hammam Shafie will, one-by-one select the most generic dances of America, offer these in a series of individually choreographed in a modern presentation to the public. And finally, the combined dish, the full bouillabaisse a combination of all of these dances in a symposium of dance that in its totality is uniquely American Dance Extravaganza. Dance Story If this choreography was filmed from the top, you would see the word victory spelled out a few times. This is a prelude to a story yet to be told in a film presentation. A true story based on one dancer, who wanted to choreograph 15 dancers in a production of the "Evolution of Dance in America" to entertain the influx of visitors to Los Angeles during the 1984 Olympics. Instead of putting on a show in 1200 seat theater, he ended up dancing and assisting in the production, choreography and direction of the XXIII Olympiad Opening Ceremonies with a cast of thousands that was watched by 2.5 billion people across the world. The Festival "Almahrajan" Act I Is Arabic Culture alive and well in Southern California? The following scenes from a two hour musical play demonstrate that it is alive and thriving. The performers are American kids of Arabic heritage who had little or no theatrical experience at all, but supported by the very talented Zahra Trougy, Fareed Rays and Laureta Ghoulam. Adapted from a play by Amira Asslay, Hammam Shafie wrote and directed it. Fahim Alsadi composed the music and single handedly accompanied it. Additional music by Dr. Sami Farge, and additional choreography and star performances by Adam Basma and Yahya Nasralla. The play was produced by Ferial Masry to educate her students of Arabic school the values and beauty of their ancestry ever tarnished image. Although the video is of a poor quality which was not the intended medium for a stage play, however, the content is superb. This is a play about what most emigrants go through. Having kids that are borne and raised in the USA, and the inability to provide for their basic needs can be devastating. With poor job skills and little command of the language and the culture, identity crises are a constant struggle. Living in familiar places with the support of family and friends can be very comforting and providing basic needs is rarely an issue. However, the opportunities to excel in whatever endeavor you chose are scares. Off you go to the new world seeking to reach the pinnacle of your goal, only to learn that it would cost you handsomely. What seems to be to the average American as a routine trend of character, to the newly arrived emigrants it is humiliating. Have had or would have to compromise your values and virtues and scum to the abyss of the low and down trodden is a very compelling matter. The fear of the devil's web hunts every thought and literally cripples every move. Now you are at the juncture where the road forks and you take the one less traveled, to find out that you are duped. Wherever you came from or wherever you are going is one of the same. The road is camouflaged and festooned with the colors of your own insight and the destination is nothing but a mirage. Nevertheless, as the Arabic proverb says: "Man Sara Ala Aderb Wasel, Wa Man Jed Wajed". Translation: With diligence, consistency and hard work, he who seek shell find. Hammam Shafie ham@universalcasting.com "Dancers will have neither the skills nor the elements for creativity until they have learned the ABC of dance movements. After learning the basic dance forms, they can begin to find their own personal style, diversify and create if they want to. First you learn the alphabet. Then you construct sentences. Then you make poetry." Tags: Jazz Modern Ballet Dance Company |

Sandra Giles in "From Hooker to Hollywood" Actress, Born Lelia, Bernice Giles, on a July day in Hooker, Oklahoma. She was used to hard living. She'd been on the road since she was twelve when she'd run away from her home in San Antonio. Her father had gone to jail for molesting her. Her mother waited tables all-night and slept all day. After Bernice and her sister were sent to foster homes, she just took off. She signed up with an outfit that recruited teen-agers to sell magazines door to door. She told them she was eighteen and she looked it. A few years later, when her mother, now divorced moved to Anaheim, Bernice hitchhiked across the country to be with her.
