Mount Pinatubo: An Exercise in Public Misinformation? In 1991 Mount Pinatubo (a volcano in the Philippines) eurpted and released 20 million tonnes of Sulfur dioxide. This part of the story is fully established. However nobody agrees on how much Carbon dioxide this eruption released, and nobody even tells the volume of CO2 it did release! I have two questions for any geologists or volcanologists who watch this video: 1. How much CO2 did the 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo release? 2. Why is this information not as ubiquitous as the volume of SO2 the eruption released? UPDATE: YouTube cut off the last second of the video so the brief flash of the volcano did not appear as the image for this video. I put the image of the volcano at the middle of the video so it would appear but with the last second cut off it didn't.
