Primus' "The Toys Go Winding Down" on bass - LRRG Obviously, Les does not play this tune with a pick, but he is a total bass god worshipped the world around, and I am some dufus on youtube with limited finger skills. Where my fingers leave off skill-wise, the pick begins. Honestly, I have tried for years, and there is just no way I can replicate those tight little triplets with my fingers for the entire tune's length. I'm okay for perhaps the first verse, but after that, it sounds like mush. I hate sounding like mush. So here it is, Toys the way I play it. Danava's "Where Beauty and Terror Dance" on bass - LRRG Anyone who has been watching my vids for a while knows that every now and again I engage in some esoterica. Well, this is certainly an example of that. Danava is a band from Portland that plays a style that is reminiscent of 1970's progressive rock. Their video for this song has been featured on Headbanger's Ball a couple of time recently, but their videos have gotten little attention on youtube. A pity, because these guys are genius musicians that do not hide behind fancy effects or a polished studio sound. This tune is off of their most recent album UnonoU, which was released in February of this year (2008). I, of course, only approximate the bass line of the tune, as I am sure there are a couple of off notes here and there. Such is the way of ear-playing...every day is an experiment. I went for a muddy tone, which is a little farty at the beginning from buzzing on my pickup...whoops. Nevertheless, I hope my little rendition exposes a few people to this cool band and allows others to appreciate the intelligence of their work. Real creative stuff. Judas Priest's "Hellion/Electric Eye" LRRG collab vid add "&fmt=18" to the URL in your browser for MUCH better stereo sound. Okay, here is a non-Iron Maiden collaboration that the fellas and I are releasing. Judas Priest is not my normal music, but I enjoyed myself for this one. Forgive the fact that I "Steve Harris"ed up th bass line. Priest's bass player's lines are pretty doggone boring! As usual, satch tore the hell out the solo. Great job, my man! Blame any synch problems in the music or in the video on me. I'm the guy who mixed it. Primus' "Power Mad" on bass - LRRG If you don't count my rendition of "One Better" by Claypool, I have been neglecting the Primus lately. So many good bands, and I must admit that I have been playing some of the more 80s metal stuff for my collab band and whatnot, so my slapping thumb hasn't had the workout. So here is me getting back into the swing of my funk numbers. The tune is off of Primus' controversial "Antipop" album. Some love it, some hate it....I am in the former category. There are some real great tunes off of that album, and this is one of them. Pay no attention to the fact that I deviate from the script...it's a combination of brain farts and over-indulgence. Les is a god...I am a cheap fascimile. The tap part was fun to play...I wish it came out louder. Oh well..I'll beat the hell out of it the next time. Megadeth's "Bad Omen" on bass - LRRG This is the second video I am releasing today (the first being a 311 double-header), and it is a fast one. This is a B-side tune off of the "Peace Sells....But Who's Buying" album, released in the year thrash metal broke into the mainstream, along with Slayer and Anthrax (Metallica already had broken through 6 months before). What is this tune known for? Well, those little guitar pick slides early in the tune were really cool and stood out....and the bass line is from hell, probably the toughest one on the album. The white space in the middle of the tune that leads into the guitar solo is the launching pad for a real punch in the gut ending sequence. Megadeth's earlier albums were far more noodly than their later work, which went more mainstream. I have no idea how Dave Ellefson playing this stuff with a pick night after night...he must've worn his forearm raw. 311's "Six" & "Lucky" on bass - LRRG Two tunes for the price of one! Actually, maybe the fact that two tunes are here will make up for the low-battery on the camera fuzziness of the video. Sorry about that. 311 videos do not get the views my other bands do, and their songs are short. So doubling up vids will probably be the way I handle 311 from now on...kinda like my Mike Watt stuff. Anyways, two great tunes from 311, both concentrating a LOT on timing. I do my best, but P-Nut is way more precise than I am. For "Six" the beat is off, kinda syncapated, so you have to listen to this tune for weeks to get the rhythm. But if played right, it is awesome. The second tune, "Lucky" has been sitting on my song list for a while...unlearned. Because a viewer requested it this week, I cracked it open, gave it the standard 1/2 hour of learning by ear, and gave it a go. Forgive me for the chorus on that tune...it still isn't right, but getting closer :). I know it is some scale in F sharp, but I've tried a lot of permutations to no avail..wish I knew more about music. Maybe it is P-Nut's 5 string coming to haunt me. The rest of the tune is right, I think. Anyways, hope you enjoy this one. I recorded another tune today, a scorching thrash tune by Megadeth that promises to melt a few faces. That vid will not have the fuzziness. By the way, all vids I shot today are 11.60 fps. I was going for better video quality, and only succeeded on the Megadeth video. Iron Maiden's "Flight of Icarus" LRRG Collaboration Video add "&fmt=18" to the URL in your browser for MUCH better stereo sound. OK...this is the NEW video. Those other two are re-releases. This one is us four doing Piece of Mind's classic, "Flight of Icarus". Tricky little tune, even though most of it is fairly easy, there are some interesting rhythms, and as PDX and satch can show you, the solo work is not the easiest, either. For this one, I isolated Bruce even more than last time. I completely cut Iron Maiden out of the mix if Bruce was not singing. So I hope this has better quality sound-wise than before. Enjoy! Iron Maiden's "Aces High" LRRG Collaboration Video add "&fmt=18" to the URL in your browser for MUCH better stereo sound. And here is the first video with our new drummer, wcwhitner. Great stuff here, but we made some mistakes when shooting it (we used different version of the same song). so at the end, things fall apart a bit because all of our version are slightly different lengths. Oh well, you live, you learn. I also cut out a lot of the background studio tune by isolating the vocal band to cut down on the mix. All we wanted from the tune was Bruce, since we have no Bruce. So why am I releasing these so late? Because so far, I have had the other guys upload these vids to their channel and I didn't want our videos competing with themselves. But we have a new video coming out tonight, so watch for it. It's "Flight of Icarus"...after this we're doing some Priest. Iron Maiden's "The Trooper" LRRG Collaboration Video add "&fmt=18" to the URL in your browser for MUCH better stereo sound. For all who may have missed it, I have joined a virtual 80's metal band. We have no name, so don't ask...it's a youtube band. So this was the first "band" video we made. The two guitar player that are with me are PDXguitarlegend and satchboogy, both excellent players. We are still working out the audio kinks, and we are looking for a great hair metal band vocalist if one is available. That way we do not have to have a backing track any more. So enjoy this re-release. Tags: Iron Maiden guitar bass Steve Harris Adrian Smith Dave Murray The Trooper Piece of Mind Rickenbacker 80s metal |

Iron Maiden's "Aces High" on bass - LRRG Here it is, my part of the collaboration project with PDXguitarlegend, satchbooggy, and wcwhitner. Yes, I play it with a pick....so what of it? LOL. If I play it with my fingers, it looks nice, but only sounds half as good, and for a collab video, I am not letting my "bandmates" down. Minutemen - Mike Watt -Trilogy of Tunes II on bass - LRRG "Cut" "Pure Joy" "Sell or be Sold" Here is my second installment of Minutemen tunes on bass...three in all. The tunes featured here come from two of their albums: "What Makes Man Start Fires?", and "Buzz or Howl Under the Influence of Heat". Once again, for those of you not familiar with the Minutemen, they were an excellent punk band from the 80's that put out a different brand of punk than most...it has funk and style and taste. Their bass player, Mike Watt, is one of the strongest, tightest, most melodic bass players ever...a real powerhouse with fingers or pick. Every bass player that plays punk should learn some Mike Watt...it is kinda of like Les Claypool, but you need strength instead of finesse to play it. The opening tune, "Cut" is just an all-around rocker....great beat, great feel. The second tune, "Pure Joy", has a real punctate sound that Make Watt was known for, alongside an excellent bridge and ending bass solo. The last tune, "Sell or be Sold" has a great chordy riff that works out the flamenco hand coupled with some strong walky scale work in between. Great stuff, and not too hard to learn since the tunes are short enough (1-2mins) to play over and over quickly (you can only practice "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" 4 times an hour, after all). Goodman & Basie "Life Goes to a Party" on bass - LRRG OK...here is another to put in the "what the heck?" file for those of you who are used to the normal bands I choose. This is a request from the wife, who likes to see me struggle with swing, and this tune is off of one of her favorite movies "Swing Kids" (which sounds like a dipy movie, but is actually very good). You see, I have no idea what I am doing when I play bass...I am self-taught, and I have never studied any theory. I know one scale (Major), and I don't even play it very often. So playing this stuff is pure improvisation for me. I have no idea what I am going to do next or how it will sound, but there you have it. The best part about playing Swing is that I am learning what works and what doesn't when it comes to walking. There isn't much walking in rock, metal, or funk so it is a great exercise for me. So forgive any out of place notes scale-wise, and forgive the fact that I completely ignore what the original bass line is (which I can't really hear anyways), and hopefully you can get some enjoyment out of my struggles. Dethklok's "Duncan Hills Coffee/Face Fisted" on bass - LRRG I have been listening a lot to these Dethklok tunes lately on my mp3 player, and let me tell you, this stuff is awesome metal! This video features two fine examples of awesomeness from the Dethalbum, the Duncan Hills Coffee theme (the first tune I ever heard from the show) and Face Fisted (a personal fave of mine). Is this what Murderface is playing? Probably not, just what I thought would sound good with the tune (following the guitar in many places where Murderface does not)...but that is what happens when you mix the bass player out of the tunes. Some other bass player will come by and fill in the holes. Sorry about the weird increases in volume in two placs. Youtube really has funky algorithms that do all kinds of stuff to my videos seemingly randomly. Puts em out of synch and sometimes there are sound anomalies...this is one of those times. Iron Maiden's "Flight of Icarus" on bass - LRRG Well, here is the last of the three vids I am releasing this weekend....a classic off of Iron Maiden's "Piece of Mind" album (one of my faves). I usually recommend this tune for bass players looking to learn some Maiden. The song does not have ridiculously fast right-hand technique like most of the rest of Maiden. Forgive the occasional flubbed note....I hadn't played this tune in years and tried a few places for the last notes of the pre-chorus before I settled. Les Claypool's "One Better" on bass - LRRG Well, here is my second video of the weekend, One Better. First off, let me begin by saying I have no business putting this video up because I am far from learning the tune in its entirety. Les fills this tune with numerous little tidbits and fills that I am still too mentally challenged to remember them all. So during these parts, I just made up whatever felt good to me....of course, when do I ever not do that? I am not going to be shooting any more videos at this resolution, though. Even though the framerate is better, the vids come out fuzzy. You live, you learn. By the way, I uploaded this tune based on request. I am not sure I would have the courage to release the tune otherwise. Tags: Les Claypool Whales and Woe bass Schecter LRRG Rob Rock Funk |

Rush's "Vital Signs" on bass - LRRG After a long haitus from a broken camera (thanks to my cat), I have finally got back to making videos. This first one is one of my favorite tunes by Rush, Vital Signs. Really, there is not a single tune off of Moving Pictures that blows, but this one is especially good for its message. Everybody has to deviate from the norm. I spaz out in the dorkiest way during this tune...apologies to those with allergies to geekdom. More to follow this weekend. I need to give this new camera a spin or two to get used to it, as well as the tripod...not to mention that I had to reset my BP80 and lost my custom channels, so I am trying to dial in on tone, as well. So the picture is a little out of frame, my hair is a mess, and I cannot get over the silly faces I make. Not to mention a few flubbed notes and the upload made the video go slightly out of synch (the video a little early compared to the audio). About par for the course. Black Sabbath's "Lord of this World" on bass - LRRG Here is a tune off of my favorite Sabbath album, Master of Reality. I know it is not a tune that gets all of the attention (like Sweet Leaf or Children of the Grave), but I enjoyed it as well as a few other unsung tunes from that album. So here it is, one half an hour's work learning and playing a Sabbath tune. There are some mistakes, like my inability to stick with the script towards the end, and I am not sure of a couple of parts, but hey...its all for the fun of it! Primus' "Pudding Time" on bass - LRRG I'm baaack! After my motherboard took a burn on Sunday morning (USB ports are not the place to put your power cord, I found out), I thought I had lost my computer for good. Thanks to my best friend, the Sloid, my computer has been completely resurrected (minus on USB port)! Yay! In celebration, I played Pudding Time. Tough tune because the main riff has this combination chord, tap, hammer thingy that stretches across all four strings.....very hard to play without accidentally hitting an open string that doesn't belong or mis-hitting that hammered chord at position 7. I make both mistakes at least once in the tune, particularly towards the end, but overall, the rendition is passable. Don't want to take a chance on blowing my computer again (fingers crossed). To all whose videos I have missed, I will spend the next week catching up. Sorry about that. Tags: Primus Les Claypool Pudding Time Alternative Funk Frizzle Fry Schecter bass LRRG zodiak |

Dethklok's "Bloodrocuted" on bass - LRRG Time to play some freaking metal!! I shot this video for a collaboration with another youtuber (it's a secret), but the video came out with a low framerate, it seems. Looks like I'll have to shoot the collab video again because that vid should be good quality, but there is no sense wasting this one, either. From The Dethalbum that spawned from the show, "Metalocalypse", Dethklok's "Bloodrocuted". This is a tune I first heard on the metal audio channel on my cable TV, only to discover that this band doesn't really exist, but is a cartoon...a REALLY COOL freaking cartoon with some bad-ass music written by experienced death metallers (old schoolers like me). Apologies to any who wanted a perfect version of the song from the official tabs (which I do not have). I play everything by ear, and often make up parts to give tunes my own spin. A bass is far more capable of doing that sort of thing than the other instruments without destroying the integrity of the song, in my opinion. As long as it is done in certain places. Some facts: The song is severely down-tuned to C, which required an intonation and action alteration, I am wearing a big plastic viking helmet because I am a spaz with no sense of what is cool and what is stupid, and the armband is to prevent the edge of Priscilla (my Rickenbacker) from eating into my forearm. It's not rounded off like my other bass is. Tags: Dethklok Metalocalypse Murderface Bloodrocuted bass Rickenbacker Priscilla Zodiak LRRG Death Metal |
