| Sailor Moon Anime/Manga Comparison 11 Before watching this video, please be sure to have read the top half of the video description for Part 1 of this series so that you understand what this project is all about. You can find Part 1 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om__F97WheA ----- This comparison shows the differences in the portrayal of Mamoru's psychological strength in both the anime and the manga. In the anime series, Mamoru is brainwashed two times (by Beryl & Nehelenia). In the manga, Mamoru is brainwashed three times (by Beryl, Black Lady, & Galaxia). However, his being brainwashed in the manga does not place his mental strength in a bad light because he was either under the control of a loved one, and thus highly vulnerable, or dead at the time of brainwashing. On the other hand, anime Mamoru was severely wounded, not dead, when Beryl brainwashed him, and had a piece of mirror stuck in his eye when he was pulled into Nehelenia's nightmare. Although these were rather difficult situations for Mamoru, his inability to escape from them by himself makes it seem as though he lacks the willpower that a hero should possess. In the manga, however, Mamoru is one of the most mentally stable characters. In several instances, he is shown warning the Senshi not to be fooled by the enemies' tricks and reminding them to stay strong. In the instance of Nehelenia's nightmare, especially, the differences between anime Mamoru and manga Mamoru's willpower are quite obvious. While anime Mamoru fell into Nehelenia's nightmare and had to be saved by Sailor Moon, manga Mamoru was the only one who was able to escape from the nightmare and wake Sailor Moon and the rest of the senshi. His strength of will even amazes the Outer Senshi, who think, "Prince! He left that nightmare on his own?!" Indeed, manga Mamoru seems much more princely and heroic than anime Mamoru, who must constantly be saved when he cannot save himself. THINGS TO NOTE IN THE MANGA: 'Bunny' = 'Usa' 'Darien' = 'Mamo-chan' MANGA SCENARIO: This nightmare takes place after Usagi and Mamoru learn more about the Golden Crystal from Helios and before the final battle against Nehelenia. IMPORTANT DIFFERENCES: In the manga, Mamoru is the first to excape from the nightmare and does not need to be saved by Sailor Moon. In the manga, people were not trapped in Nehelenia's nightmare after staring at mirrors. The background music during the manga section is "Bring Me to Life" by Evanescence. The images you see are not full manga pages. I split the pages into pieces so that the image can be bigger on the screen, allowing you to read the words more easily. I also excluded some panels that were not crucial to this particular comparison in order to shorten the video length. There are websites where you can download the scans of the entire manga series! Please feel free to message me or comment this video to ask for a link to such a website. I'll be more than happy to send it to you! Please rate & comment!
