| Doing Fieldwork - Levada do Caquende In order to illustrate what had been discussed about the importance the Paraguaçu River has to the city and the people of Cachoeira, LEAA's team did a boat excursion down the river waters. During the 40 minute sail to the Engenho da Vitória, an ancient sugar cane mill and quilombola community, our students were able to interview the boat crew and the teacher Francisca Marques about the history of the Paraguaçu. They could also record some soundscapes, of the river and the natural life around it, which are available as samples in this website. In the Engenho da Vitória, the children interviewed two elderly residents of that area, who talked about the region's prosperous economic past and also about the close relation the people living in that area have with the Paraguaçu.
